Hera Pheri 3 is back on the talkies. It always comes in the same way every couple of months. This time the internet is abuzz with news that Paresh Rawal is finally back with Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty. The group apparently verified it. However, if you delve into the Bollywood world behind-the-scenes, it’s a lot more complicated than a ‘reunion for good news’ headline
Actually, this film has been languishing in a peculiar state of development for several years already. Bigger entertainment portals were making several days ago reports that Paresh Rawal has indeed walked out of the movie. Even according to the rumours he returned the eleven lakh rupee amount he was paid with fifteen per cent interest due to problems with his payment structure. Soon, however, other industry sources dismissed those reports as recycled old news from a legal battle which took place back in 2025. To stay up-to-date on can be exhausting
Asks directors and actors themselves and no one has a straight answer. Priyadarshan, who is expected to handle this third film, was recently quoted by the reporters saying that he was not aware of any new actors of whom he was not aware. In the meantime, Akshay Kumar outrightly confessed in an interview that it will not be happening anytime soon. Deep structural problems and complex paperwork have been among the key points he cited for the project’s difficulties. But although the primary cast are on good terms and wish to work together, the film itself is in a legal and financial limbo.
Baburao is at a standstill as far as money and contracts are concerned.
Baburao Ganpatrao Apte is an essential part of a Hera Pheri movie. It was made a household name by Paresh Rawal, and it was his performance that is responsible for the fact that people make memes long after a film that’s more than two decades old. It’s because when there is any news around his departure, Hindi movie buffs are in absolute panic
The financial terms that had been trumfled in the 2025 court battle reveal just how much this project is continuing to run into. Rawal was said to have a huge sum of fifteen crores locked up. But in practice, it would be wonderful. However, the terms of the contract put it that he would only get fourteen point eight nine crores of that money after a month of the movie release. That is a very high dollar risk for an acting veteran.
But that’s not the end of it — the film’s main shootings continue to be delayed. If they do not begin shooting until late next year, the film won’t be released until late in 2026 or early in 2027. That means, Paresh Rawal would have to wait nearly 2 years to get any pay for his work. But as soon as there was a little friction and Akshay Kumar’s production house, Cape of Good Films, took the issue to court and sought damages of Rs 25 crore, it was evident that the boardroom skirmishes were far more serious than any comedy script. Eventually they made up, but the contractual concerns persisted.
The franchise has fallen foul of its own past.
The first Hera Pherri was released in the year 2000. It was a remake of a Malayalam film Ramji Rao Speaking, and it revolutionized Indian comedy. In 2006, Phir Hera Pheri (late Neeraj Vora) came out and made Raju, Shyam and Baburao legends.
Hera Pheri Franchise Timeline
2000: Original Hera Pheri releases (Directed by Priyadarshan)
2006: Phir Hera Pheri releases (Directed by Neeraj Vora)
2025: Major legal disputes surface over cast contracts and film rights
2026: Project remains delayed due to complex legal and financial agreementsThe pressure on the third part is huge, since those first two movies are so much beloved. This project has been attempted by the producers several times in ten years. They even thought about swapping the main cast with a few actors, such as John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, at different stages. Those ideas were met with instant and severe opposition from the fans. Audiences aren’t interested in a “generic” comedy franchise. It is a particular chemistry that they want between Akshay, Suniel and Paresh.
That fervent fan anticipation is a double-edged sword. It assures a huge opening day audience should the film ever be produced, but also enables the actors to ask for huge paychecks and creative control. If everyone is a big celebrity with a lot of commitments, it is a logistical nightmare to coordinate dates. This is something that Akshay Kumar has specifically pointed out, saying that he is currently shooting a comedy film called Welcome to the Jungle with the three actors, but the ongoing contractual issues of Hera Pheri 3 are dragging it back.
What’s up next for the iconic trio?
For now, the official position of the production team is that the reunion remains on, though it hasn’t yet been confirmed. The actors are intimate with each other and they really mean it when they ask for something from the audience. Behind the scenes, it is said that director Suniel Shetty has been working as a “quiet peacemaker” in the finance issues that have resulted in arguments between the producer and his co-stars.
Making movies and being on a screen is a different ballgame in contemporary Bollywood. Today the industry is in a position in which big-budget sequels are very hard to produce due to the increasing production costs and changing dynamics in theaters. Other big franchises such as Krrish 4 and Don 3 are also in a similar limbo.
For fans who have been waiting for a teaser drop, the best thing to do is to be very patient, according to industry sources. It seems that the script written by Rohan Shankar isn’t being used anymore, so they will have to get creative and come up with something fresh! With the producers still to finalise payment terms and legal issues around the film’s rights, Hera Pheri 3 is unlikely to make its way to the big screen anytime soon.
