The First Week Numbers

The first week is complete. And the numbers are dead flat. Chand Mera Dil is a romantic drama film directed by Vivek Soni, which will release in theatres on 22nd May 2026. It had the massive support from the Dharma Productions of Karan Johar. However, the crowds were not what they were expecting. Ananya Panday and Lakshya star in the film. It was able to raise around Rs 19.45 crore during its initial seven days in India. This is a very low number for a big release with big names.

Let’s take a closer look at the daily breakdown. According to the data from ‘Sacnilk’, opening day collections were merely Rs 3 crore. This was an extremely poor beginning. Things did not get much better over the weekend. Around Rs 3.65 crore is introduced on Saturday. The price increased marginally to Rs 4.25 crore on Sunday. A big weekend makes a successful mainstream romantic movie; usually a big Sunday. That was not the case here. That’s an eminently too small of a jump to save the week.

Then was the dreaded Monday drop. Collections dropped by 25 percent to Rs 2.25 crore. Rs 2.10 crore on Tuesday. The film’s box office figures dipped to Rs 1.90 crore on Wednesday. The earnings per show increased slightly on Thursday to Rs 2.20 crore in 3,713 shows. However, this minor increase on Thursday is negligible given the lack of any significant increase on the week overall, domestically. Globally, the movie grossed an estimated Rs 3.05 crore. This brings the global gross to just about Rs 26.03 crore. These figures easily make it one of the biggest box office crashes of 2026 so far.

A FILLED SHOW BOX

Movie release dates are critical in the film industry. Chand Mera Dil walked right into a heavily crowded market. It was head to head with a Hollywood giant. The Mandalorian and Grogu were released on the same day as Star Wars. That was a big hit at the multiplex and a huge slice of the young audience. It was more expensive to go to the Hollywood version, but they were still willing to pay for the big show.

Meanwhile, the movie was competing with some older movies. Pati Patni Aur Woh Do starring Ayushmann Khurrana had already crossed its first week on the silver screen. Still, it firmly maintained screens. It just recently breached the Rs 57 crore international mark. When it comes to exhibitions, the exhibitors always want to keep a good success rather than taking risks on a new movie that has no buzz yet. The screens were divided. There had been very few footfalls. Theater owners in some tier two metros were suddenly running short of quality slot time for the Ananya Panday film, as they squeezed out the best of their showrooms for franchise films.

It is a Zero Buzz or Mixed Review for the student.

Before dropping a movie, it needs some hype. The film Chand Mera Dil was released with virtually no soundtrack. The marketing campaign was without visibility. When Friday came, many of those who had bought tickets were not aware the movie had been released.

Not so kindly were the critics. There were mixed but mostly negative reviews. Some critics noted that the story was lacking a good pace. The main story is of Lakshya who is played by Aarav and Ananya Panday as Chandni, with Aastha Singh in a supporting role as Jyotsna. The supporting cast includes Pratham Rathod, Aashish Dubey, Ankur Poddar and Elvis Jose. Some reviewers were pleased with the new duo, but most saw the script as old fashioned and lacking the vitality to hold an audience’s attention. There is no such thing as a positive word of mouth started among the masses.

The conflict of the genre

Romantic dramas have been quite poor in the box office lately. These types of films are generally seen on streaming services before they go to cinemas, unless the music can be a huge hit prior to release. Chand Mera Dil songs failed to make it to the music charts. The sound of the launch was fairly subdued. The music wasn’t sufficient without a hit song to attract the youth to the movies. Right now people are paying for action films, big spectacles or popular comedy series. Enough said about a quiet, grounded love story. Chand Mera Dil couldn’t get that kind of support.

The Viral Bharatanatyam Dance

You can’t talk about this film without talking about the internet reaction. One scene of the film was picked up by social media. Ananya Panday dances a modern Bharatanatyam piece. The moment arrived in X and Instagram in just a couple of hours after the first morning show.

It went viral. But not in a good way. The actress was heavily taunted by the netizens for the dance. Her movements were recorded in video clips and the videos became memes and reaction videos. These short clips were viewed on several platforms, with a total number of millions. However, the general public began to joke about that one particular routine and that’s how the film caught fire. If the curiosity factor is high enough, then online chatter can sometimes lead to ticket sales. The memes didn’t go away on the internet this time, though. No one was coming to see the dance on the big screen just for that. This online event did not translate to cash at the gate.

There were times when I had to let go of the negative and embrace the positive.

Some elements of the movie managed to tap a miniscule market notwithstanding the poor financials. A few viewers applauded the central relationship depicted on screen. Aarav and Chandni’s relationship is utterly free of toxic relationship tropes. In modern romantic dramas, drama is usually created from the unhealthy behaviour, which is rare here. The characters communicate. They treat others as normal people. Lakshya got some good reviews for his performance. He played his role very quietly and responsibly, many said.

However, a handful of positive relationship tweets are not enough to pay the bills. The movie still did not attract the large crowds it had to get back to break even.
