Apple is just beginning to stir. The tech giant has been patiently observing the developments by Google, OpenAI and Anthropic’s Claude over the last two years, which have revolutionized how we interact with our devices. But now, Apple is taking countermeasures. It has been reported that iOS 27 will feature a huge artificial intelligence makeover for iPhones. The key to this update is the new, totally remodeled Siri. This area has been a major stumbling block for the company. Even had to go through a whopping $250 million settlement. However, it looks like the wait may be coming to an end. The June 8th Worldwide Developers Conference is fast approaching, and already, screenshots and other details are trickling out. Apple realize that they’ve lost valuable time in the AI game. It’s their big comeback attempt with this upcoming update.
Siri Moves to the Dynamic Island
The most obvious change will be at the top of your screen. Siri will no longer appear as that glowing orb at the bottom of the display. The voice assistant is being integrated directly into the Dynamic Island by Apple. Once you click the wake word or press the power button, the pill-shaped cut out will be replaced with a new animation. This voice mode is for fast and convenient voice instructions and rapid web searches. Apple would prefer the phone’s voice response to be more part and parcel of the actual hardware of the device. However, this is just part of the story.
The Search or Ask Interface.
Not all people would like to converse in public with their phone. Apple is now finally getting it. Swiping down from the top center will launch a new Search/Ask interface in iOS 27. It does a complete overhaul on the usage of the iPhone. The standard Notification Center is being pushed to the top-left corner of the display as this new menu occupies the center “swipe”. This new swipe-down screen is very text based. It will present a list of eight recommended applications that you use on a regular basis. There are also fast widgets to display information such as the weather or voice records. If you ask a question here, the answer will not be a plain text only response. Siri will create a rich text card that will materialise out of the Dynamic Island to provide information about a person, place or news item.
A Dedicated Siri Chatbot App
If you have a very complex question, then a simple drop down menu isn’t enough. So Apple is taking some steps that haven’t been taken before. They are introducing a new standalone Siri app. It is designed to take on the big players such as ChatGPT and Claude. When swiping deeper into Search or Ask interface, this new application will open. It has a sleek, contemporary chatbot appearance and feel. The home screen stores all of your conversations. Purchased conversations can be displayed using a list or a grid of small rectangles. It has a text box at the bottom, upload attachment option for photo or file and a dedicated voice mode.
Let Rivals in the Walled Garden
This is where many in the tech community got stung. Apple is well known for its software’s tight lock. However, the pace of the AI race is too rapid for them to develop everything from the ground up. So they’re giving their biggest competitors a chance. This new Siri’s core system is indeed powered by Google’s Gemini technology. That’s a huge turnaround in Apple’s approach as a whole. However, they are taking it even further. The new system will enable users to send their queries straight to external AI models. You’ll actually be able to use a drop-down menu and tell Claude or ChatGPT what it is you want to ask rather than Apple’s own tools. All you need to do is download these agents straight from the App Store.
Major changes in Camera and Photos.
The AI is not only restricted to answering random trivia questions. Apple’s adding this new intelligence directly to the camera itself. Siri will be a new shooting mode in the standard Camera app. This completely replaces the older Visual Intelligence tool. Point camera and instantly do a Google reverse image search. The camera is to get a Add Widgets panel for serious photographers. This allows you to replace the first line of standard shortcuts with pro-level features, such as depth controls, timers and night mode.
The Photos app is also receiving a similarly giant facelift. Creating photos is about to be a breeze. The new tool from Apple is named Reframe. This feature will automatically adjust the perspective of your photo if the angle may look awkward. Extend will use generative AI to add missing information outside of the picture’s boundaries. Apple is even experimenting with a future update that will allow you to simply type into the picture to change what it shows, using other everyday words.
Context is Everything
If a smart assistant is not aware of what you’re doing, it’s not of much use. The rebuilt Siri can fully comprehend your screen context. Can actually know what you’re viewing on your phone at any time. If you’re trying to set up a meeting, you may ask Siri to look into your calendar for any conflicts before you schedule it. It uses your personal data from various apps to make the following tasks easy.
