Infinity Ward has broken the Internet. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is getting underway. It will be released on October 23rd, 2026. This news was accompanied by a massive shock about the monetary implications of this. According to reports, the game will cost an eye-watering $670 million. It’s among the most costly entertainment projects ever produced.

There’s been an uproar about that cost. It encompasses the development, marketing, server infrastructure and any other elements required for launching a global product. With this kind of budget comes the feeling that Activision is placing all their eggs in one basket with this release. It’s not like you’re spending almost 700 million dollars unless you think the game is going to take over the holiday season. There is a lot of money trouble in the game industry. A lot of studios are either closing or getting smaller. However, Infinity Ward’s taking a completely different approach. They are spending an incredible sum of money on this endeavour.

A new look for the Old Consoles!New look for the Old Consoles!

This game is compatible only with the current hardware. Modern Warfare 4 will make its debut on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. There’s also a Switch 2 version in the works in the future. So, if you’re still using a PS4 or Xbox One, you’re in for a complete loss! Again, the developers did a drastic cut. What they are trying to build cannot be run by older consoles.

Passing over the one before the last generation is a huge risk. There are still millions of players who use older hardware. However, the developers were convinced that this was absolutely essential. Their goal is to take the graphics and physics to a new level. But that is not possible if you have to make the game work on a 2013 machine. The odd thing about it is that the game won’t be on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Since it’s now owned by Microsoft, everyone knew that it would be on day one of Game Pass. That’s not happening. If you’re keen to play at launch, you’ll need to fork up $69.99 for the standard version or $99.99 for the Vault version.

The Korean Peninsula Goes to War

The story is going to extremely dark places. The campaign begins with a big, bad nightmarish situation. North Korea invades and attacks the South. A brand new environment for the MW series.

The players will play as a new South Korean soldier named Private Park. In the trailer, there was a lot of trench warfare which seemed vicious and bloody. You are at the battlefront, which is coming to an end. The guys at Infinity Ward are looking to make that a reality. Narrative Director Jeff Negus said they had to research the cultural and military aspects in great detail.

After that, there’s Captain Price. This is not the heroic leader we’re accustomed to seeing, however. Price has gone off the deep end. His introduction into the community is already being dubbed “Dark Price”. He’s going on a lawless pursuit against Makarov. His mission off the books creates issues around the globe. The campaign will see players experience a series of SAS night raids in Mumbai, high-speed chases in Paris and insane close quarters combat right in the centre of New York City. The consequences are international. Ghost is back, too, but fans are hoping for the sake of this story to mean something this time.

Fixing the Gunplay

Call of Duty is all about the multiplayer. The team states that they have completely redesigned the feel and action of a gun. They have dubbed it “Ballistic Authority”.

It is well known that in previous games many players disliked the random weapon bloom. Often your bullets would simply miss, even though you were shooting nicely. This is completely erased. Now bullets will move on a given trajectory. It should be intuitive to recoil. All shots will be dead-on! A big one for competitive gamers.

The changes to movement will also be quite significant. The sweaty players will be happy as the introducing of slide cancelling. But they are referring to it as a more serious style of parkour. They do appear to be making an effort to find a balance. They want the game to be quick, but don’t want people to be ‘hyperactive rabbits’ flying around the map.

The Shifting Map

There’s one more addition that is completely crazy. Infinity Ward has released an experimental multiplayer map, called Kill Block.

This is not a standard map. In fact Kill Block’s layout is different from round to round. Walls shift around. Cover pieces move. Structural routes are dynamically closed and open. The devs claim to be able to create more than 500 layouts.

This implies there is no such thing as simply memorising the map and popping up in a corner. This map is always changing and you must make adjustments on a regular basis. It’s a game no one has attempted anything remotely like this in a Call of Duty game. If it is true then it will revolutionize the way multiplayer games go. When the servers have a problem with it, it can be a total catastrophe. This will be discovered during the open beta period.

A desire to deliver in a hurry.

Infinity Ward is bearing the burden of the franchise at the moment. Recently player interest has been diminished. There was a lot of franchise fatigue from fans. Many serious players had a feeling of laziness and shortness of campaigns.

This $670 million investment is an indication that they know of the issue. They need MW4 to be a huge success. The fans are seeking an earthy, reality-based experience. They want maps that don’t get boring after 2 weeks. They desire fair player-to-player battles and consistent netcode. The October 23 release is coming up soon. The key for Activision now is to prove that the massive price tag can result in a game worth playing.
