They all have wheels just like us but instead of walking they want to go fast, very fast. Police cars, racing cars, fantastic cars, the lot is all here. A hectic karting world co-exists with glamorous racing cars, faraweled Police cruisers, an I.D. Driven American road trip.
Virtues meet vices in this futuristic motoring Utopia.
Do you think that was a bit dramatic?
Well, it is not that hard to get into their world.
It is such a visually entertaining film; but it is more importantly, a great film for children.
It is unpredictable and funny but it will also make you think and remember what is really important. The whole film is based on a theme, just like all of the other Pixar productions, heroism. With a lot of attention, especially to cars and racing this is a top car film for movie lovers of 28 or 80.
So there are cars everywhere. That is what you think when first entering the film. There are 196 of cars; they are all made up of over 1000 car-characters with a unique personality and at least a name you would recognize.
It is all centered around the main character Lightning McQueen.
He is the hero, the racing car wanting to win the biggest race of his life but that is not what the film is about. It is the journey of the cars, and their race to the big event in Rockport. It shows that there is more to life than focusing everything on your self.
With an absence of over 600 cars, motorists can feel safe because the film is based all around as if you could really see cars racing down the highway, it is a dry world, so nothing in the film is that weird. You do not get a silly car turning up wanting to be Darth Vader or anything like that, it is just cars. Another cool feature about this film is it is built so all the headlights and the windshields glow an ability that you experience with the film. This is a good little enhancement to a good film.
The animation in Cars is brilliant but not quite up to the standard of other Pixar films. The cars look real, as if they are really blowing in the wind as they race down the road. The cars are animated so that it looks as though they are in fact real vehicles, even flicking some real life lights on and off. When the films characters are walking around the world they look unouristically perfect, when they run down the viaduct you hate every minute that they were not filming it.
Some of the scenes when some of the vehicles are racing are just so oddly designed. The best one is when they put the hearst ladies in the car, they all look like aliens. Cars is a film where the visuals have been at the center of the creation process.
For example one of the car racers, Francesco, was designed to look Italian by highlighting red eyes and a blue and white body work.
And that is what I like about this film.
There were a lot of things that went into the making of this film, for example, 2160 different rivet types were modeled to get the cars to run properly, and behind the scenes the production team used all sorts of computers and technologies to get all the different types of car into one film. You can tell the difference between the vehicles but this is in everything, like the different silhouettes you get when watching a badger and a hyena. It is how they choreograph everything that makes it a great film. However it would be wrong of me not to mention the variety of references made throughout the film; like the opening tattoo and everything 1950s or the deep references to the film Star Wars.
I would highly recommend that you watch the DVD of Cars, whether it is The British version or American, but make sure you choose the right one it really does matter. Normally I love watching the American one because they all have such American attitude and it is more of the proper version because everyone has American accents but if you watch the British version the cars speak with English accents which makes a lot more sense. In the American version only some talking cars appear, however in British version they all speak, including the Audi A8 bank.
Not only is the animation of the best but also the soundtrack chosen by Pixar to accompany the film is extremely well thought out. Although the songs chosen use everything from good to bad they go through to get the message to the viewer. For example the track ‘I am not a Loser’ was sung by a road-sign (I am in the wrong here).
Would you expect nothing less from Pixar films?
They are at the top of animation and going from strength to strength with every film.
