Rahul Bhatt, son of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, has spoken about his childhood and the bond he shared with his father as he grew up in a renowned Bollywood family.
Rahul tells, that his father and he never were close enough to make it really cross their boundaries in a conversation. According to him, Mahesh Bhatt was always busy working and was rarely around. Rahul spoke of the experience of being separated from his father and the realisation of his parents’ divorce.
Once again, the comments have highlighted the ongoing issues of Rahul’s tumultous relationship with his father that he has spoken about at various occasions over the years.
Rahul Says He Felt Rejected As A Child
Rahul Bhatt is born to Mahesh Bhatt and his first wife Kiran Bhatt. Mahesh and Kiran Bhatt had parted ways when Rahul was a kid. Rahul was earlier quoted saying that he was brought up by his mother as his father was too busy in his filmmaking assignments.
Chatting to Siddharth Kannan, Rahul also mentioned, “I felt that I was ignored during my childhood because of the fact that my father wasn’t around. I felt like I had to manage the house from a very young age.”
Hindustan Times: ‘However in an interview he said his relationship with Mahesh is not smooth and that he was not close emotionally as a child.
The separation wasn’t just that of his parents, Rahul has also revealed that growing up as part of a film star family was hard because everyone around him was aware.
He Was Teased About His Parents
In the past, Rahul has spoken about how other children made fun of him when Mahesh Bhatt filed for divorce from Kiran.
During a 2025 interview with Hindi Rush, Rahul said that he was told by other children that his father was leaving his mother. He told how these incidents would make him upset and isolated.
“I was very lonely always,” Rahul told the Times of India in describing his childhood. He also said that the “anger that I had as a child, never went away but the intensity (of it) lessened over the years.”
The reality of living a childhood in the spotlight was a bit different from what many might have believed. Despite the fact that the Bhatt family was famous in Bollywood, Rahul claimed fame couldn’t erase the emotional challenges of childhood.
Mahesh Bhatt’s Career Was Growing
Rahul was growing up to the who’s who of Hindi filmdom Mahesh Bhatt.
Maheash Bhatt gained more popularity by making films which were often inspired by his own life and strained relations. Films like Arth, Saaransh, Naam, and later Zakhm made him a director to watch out for.
Rahul, however, did not have such memories of the years when he was the son of a great filmmaker.
In all of his interviews, he’s constantly spoken about the fact of being the son of a famous father, but also that he actually wasn’t that close to him.
In an interview earlier, Rahul had said there was no male parent-figure in his childhood. He had attributed this to some of his emotional issues in his youth.
Rahul Chose A Different Path
Despite being born in a film family, Rahul never chose to take an ordinary route in Bollywood.

Rahul had previously said that he never considered himself to be a typical filmmaker’s son. In an interview to The Times of India in 2012, the actor-singer had said he was someone “who likes the common man” and not much of a social climber.

His Ties To Mahesh Bhatt Are Mixed

In a separate report The Indian Express said that Mahesh and Rahul have both spoken publicly about their contentious relationship. “Mahesh admitted to not having been there for Rahul during his formative years and also that he had walked out of his marriage to be with another woman.”
Meanwhile, Rahul has said the bond between father and son is broken.
Meanwhile, Rahul has also agreed that Mahesh has been contributing financially to the family. On a recent call, he told me that his father still paying the household bills and also takes care of Kiran’s expenses.
He made it really clear, that for him, money and closeness were two different things.
Mahesh Bhatt Still Supports The Family
Rahul’s remarkss reflect that Rahul and Mahesh Financial Connections Have also become part of Rahul’s recent comments.
“The breadwinner of this family is my father. He is still managing most of the expenses,” Rahul told Hindustan Times. Rahul also revealed that Mahesh has been bearing the expenses of Kiran.
This has created another chapter in the saga of the relationship between the two. On the other hand, Rahul’s statement implies that the cut-off distance between father and son has not stopped Mahesh from making a financial contribution to the family.
Rahul Has Also Discussed His Sisters As Well
Rahul is also Pooja Bhatt and Alia Bhatt’s half-brother as well as brother to filmmaker Shaheen Bhatt.
He has spoken in interviews about his bond with his sisters. Pooja has received powerful voices from Rahul in her line of fire.
And in yet another interview, he said he would guard Pooja if anyone would try to insult or molest her.
He also spoke about Alia’s work but said that he believes that Pooja is extremely talented.
