Celebrated actor Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on October 8, 2026, leaving the Indian film fraternity mourning the loss of a legendary actor.

The actor passed away at his residence in Dona Paulo, Goa, on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest. According to his son, Malhar Patekar, the actor was rushed to Manipal Hospital where doctors tried to resuscitate him, but all their efforts proved futile. The actor was reportedly declared dead at 5.20 am in the morning.

His death was announced by fellow actors and film directors, politicians and fans across the country. With a career that spanned a variety of serious roles and comedic turns, Patekar was best known for his raspy voice and acting chops that made him a household face.

The government of Maharashtra declared that his cremation would be performed with full state honours as he had made a significant contribution to hindi-marzati and marazati hindi film and theatre. – his funeral was held at his farmhouse, Nanachi Wadi, Donje, a village near Pune, late Thursday.

Nana Patekar’s Journey in Indian Cinema

Nana Patekar was born Vishwanath Patekar in the Indian state of Maharashtra. He initially appeared in theatre productions, later to also feature in films.

He was introduced to the film industry with the film Gaman in 1978. During initial stages of his career, he starred in movies which gave him the scope to establish his name as an actor who could convincingly carry complex and emotionally sensitive roles.

His role in Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! Catapulted him to stardom. He became a big star in commercial Hindi cinema and retained his links with Marathi films and theatre.

While the careers of many actor’s generally become a part of the prescribed screen image, Patekar fluctuated between multiple images. He could be an anguished man, a policeman, a politician, a goon or a comic actor, and would make even a cameo memorable.

He was known for his easy delivery, expressive eyes and screen presence. He could display anger and pain in the same frame – this was a factor that distinguished him from most other actors of his generation.

Films That Established His Fame

Parinda (1989) – This was a critical film in Patekar career and his role in the crime film fetched him a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Filmfare Award as well for the category.

Over time he went on to act in many other hit movies of 1990s such as Tirangaa, Angaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi and Khamoshi: The Musical.

His performance in Krantiveer (1994) proved to be one of his career’s major highlights. As the character Pratap Narayan Tilak, Patekar showed tremendous strength and earned National Film Award for Best Actor.

Throughout the 2000s, the actor starred in many difficult roles. Some of his movies were, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan and Taxi No. 9211. In Ab Tak Chhappan, he was an officer who was fighting the demons in his work and personal life.

His performance in Apaharan also drew press attention, helping cement his reputation as an actor who was capable of portraying layered characters you may not necessarily like.

From Serious Drama to Comedy

While Patekar built a reputation for serious and intense acting, he gained even greater popularity through comedy.

His character of Uday Shetty in Welcome gave him a new set of audience. The 2007 comedy, starring Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Paresh Rawal, was appreciated for it characters and comic scenes.

Natsamrat (2016) He was also loved for his acting skills in Marathi film Natsamrat. The film was released in 2016 and the story revolves around a retired stage actor who leaves the theatre world.

His Work for Farmers: Participation in Naam Foundation

2015 He co-founded ‘Naam Foundation’ with actor Makarand Anaspure in 2015. It was set up to help farmers and their families living in drought-affected areas.

The project then became a key feature in Patekar’s public life. During the period when farmers’ distress and water scarcity issues were of prime concern in some areas of Maharashtra, the foundation sought to offer help in crisis areas.

This participation in such activities provided him with an alternative aspect to the public image he had established through his acting career.

After the news of his death, some actors also took to social media to remember Patekar.

Other film celebrities such as Rajinikanth, Manoj Bajpayee, Riteish Deshmukh, Paresh Rawal, and Prakash Raj were also among those who condoled the demise of the actor. Condolences came from President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders.
