This morning my wife ( who is very religious, whereas I am an atheist ) said I will not be served eggs or non-vegetarian food during this 9 day period.
Now I feel miserable without my eggs at breakfast, and mutton/chicken/fish at lunch and dinner. Nevertheless, I accepted the diktat. Why ? Because there is one simple formula for happiness in life : obey your wife, whether what she says is sense or nonsense..
Many years back when I was a Judge in the Indian Supreme Court a case relating to divorce came before my bench. The appellant was present in court at that time.
He had instituted the divorce proceeding against his wife about 25 years back, probably thinking he would get a quick divorce and remarry, but the proceedings were prolonged ( as it happens in India ), with appeals, revisions etc, and his hair had turned white during this interval.
I pittied the fellow, and said to him ” There is one important principle for happiness in life : obey your wife. You violated that principle, and quarrelled with your wife. Now see what has happened to you. You have been running from pillar to post like a crazy person, and your hair has turned white in the meantime ”.
This oral statement of mine, though half said in jest, and though not part of any written order, was noted by the mediapersons in court, and when I returned home in the evening saw it telecast on many TV channels.
I got calls from some Judges of the Allahabad High Court ( my parent High Court ) complaining that their wives were not listening to them, saying that the Supreme Court has ruled that husbands must obey their wives, and you are only a High Court judge, and therefore bound by the decision of the Supreme Court.
The next day, a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court ( who is a friend of mine ) said in my Court ” Aapne har ghar mein jhagda karwa diya ”
But was what I said wrong ?
