“Singham Again,” the newest in Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe, with Ajay Devgn playing DCP Bajirao Singham, was released on November 1, 2024, on Diwali. The film sported a super-studded cast: Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Deepika Padukone. This is an adaptation of the Ramayana with ancient tales of the epic hero interwoven with adrenaline-pumping action scenes.
Box Office Performance
On the theatrical day, “Singham Again” performed outstandingly well and collected over ₹125 crore within the two days of theatrical run.
The global total gross came around ₹372.41 crores. Domestically, it reached a figure of around ₹297.41 crores. Though those were quite promising figures, “Singham Again” could not beat “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” which was minting better money for itself.
OTT Release and Reception
“Singham Again” finally released on Amazon Prime Video on rent on 13 December 2024 for ₹499, which was then reduced to ₹199.
However, the film somehow went missing from the platform, leaving the viewers perplexed and confused about what happened. According to some reports, Amazon Prime Video distanced itself from the film as it was not well received and did not want to get drenched in negative reviews.
Critical and Audience Feedback
Critical
“Singham Again” was mixed. While some praised the action sequences and the performances of the stars, others found the storyline predictable and that there was no innovation in the movie.
The Times of India gave it 3.5 stars, stating that “unleashes a high-octane blend of action and entertainment” despite flaws. NDTV gave it 2 stars, saying it was a “bloated, scattershot addition to the Cop Universe.”
Audience reaction is quite reflective of this aspect. Some audience loved that continuation of the saga of Bajirao Singham; on the other hand, a lot felt it offered nothing different and failed in presenting the script as interesting and thrilling.
Audiences showed unhappiness towards its movement as well as with characters as compared to earlier versions, that are expected standards and didn’t stand even an inch before predecessors.
The original “Singham” in 2011 was appreciated because of the interesting story and the great acting of Devgn that made the movie both critically and commercially successful. Its sequel, “Singham Returns” in 2014, did pretty well, though it was much more polarized.
“Singham Again” seems to have failed to reach the audience as much as the former two be it in cinema halls or OTT.
Why It Failed
Some of the reasons that could have led to a less than spectacular reception of the film include:
1. The storyline is too predictable: Critics and audiences felt that the plot easily borrowed from familiar tropes without adding any new insightful information.
2. Character Development : Some viewers felt that the movie didn’t develop enough character arcs, leading to a lack of emotional engagement.
3. Pacing Issues: The film was criticized for pacing, too chaotic first half to immerse anyone fully.
4. Premium Rental Fees: At an initial rental of ₹499 on Amazon Prime Video, it is no surprise it might not have gathered more audiences and especially if that content already sits elsewhere.
Streaming Services Impact
Content has consumed a lot differently because of the OTT. There are options dumped at the end of the finger tips of the consumers. A film like “Singham Again” has to compete with this space; it needs both star power and a story that differentiates itself from the market.
The failure of the film in grabbing the attention of viewers on Amazon Prime Video, though it had done well in theaters, showcases how content quality and viewer satisfaction are important aspects in the streaming era.
Although “Singham Again” has managed to bring in decent box office figures, it still raises a question about whether the movie could not sustain audience engagement on Amazon Prime Video.
Mixed reviews about the movie and its eventual deletion from the OTT platform signify that even old franchises have to come up with novel and different stuff to work on to capture all viewership bases in modern entertainment.
