Alice in Moorkhaland By Justice Katju

One summer afternoon a little girl called Alice was quietly lying on a green meadow and dozing when she saw a strange sight. A white rabbit, wearing a blue coat, was running on two feet, and looking at a watch in his coat was saying ” I am late ”. Saying this it jumped into a hole in the ground.

Alice’s curiosity was aroused, and getting up she followed the rabbit, and jumped into the same hole. She fell down and down until she landed on a pile of ‘gobar’ ( cow dung ) which cushioned her fall.

Getting up she saw a huge sign board on which it was written in bold letters ‘Welcome to Indistan’.

She came out of the pile of gobar, and saw a crowd of people carousing, jollifying, and celebrating, by dancing, distributing sweets, letting off fireworks, etc. When she asked what they were celebrating, they said they were celebrating their victory in a recent 4 day war over their enemies, the people of Puristan.

” But why do you regard them as your enemies  ? ” asked Alice.

” Because they are terrorists and murderers ”, they replied ” Recently they killed 26 Hindu tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir ”

” What proof do you have that it was the people of Puristan who did this horrendous deed ? It seems you have not even done any investigation before branding Puristanis as the culprits and villains  ”, Alice said.

She added ” I heard that you people of Indistan and Puristan are both poor people. How can two poor people be each other’s enemies ? It seems to me obvious that some foreign power is making you two fight each other, like a madaari making his monkeys fight ”.

At this, some in the crowd shouted ” Yeh Puristani agent hai. Maaro  saali ko ” ( She is an agent of Puristan. Kill her ”. And then the people in the crowd took out hatchets, knives, and clubs concealed under their clothes and chased Alice, who ran for her life.

She ran and ran until she crossed the Radcliffe Line, which was the border between Indistan and Puristan.

Here too she saw a huge crowd dancing, celebrating, rejoicing, merry making, and living it up. When she asked why they were doing this, the people in the crowd said they were celebrating their victory over the devils, the people of Indistan.

” But people in Indistan told me a short while back that it was they who won the war ” said Alice.’

” They lie ” said the Puristanis ” The fact that we have promoted our army chief from a General to a Field Marshal proves that we won ” they added.

At this Alice said ” In my opinion both Indistanis and Puristanis are a bunch of idiots. If you had the slightest common sense you would have realised that you are one country, and your separation in 1947 on the basis of the bogus two nation theory was a British swindle. You are both poor countries, and should join hands and fight your common enemies, that is, poverty, unemployment, price rise, malnutrition, lack of proper healthcare and good education, etc. But instead, like a pair of buffoons, dolts and nincompoops, having ‘gobar’ in your heads instead of brains, you are fighting each other, while your real enemy who is making you fight is sitting in a foreign country and laughing at you both. I will henceforth call both your countries Moorkhaland ”.

When she said this, the Puristanis gathered there shouted ” Yeh Indistani agent hai. Maaro saali ko ” ( She is an Indistani agent. Kill her ), and taking out hatchets, knives and clubs chased Alice, who ran for life.

She ran and ran, until she suddenly woke up with a start, and realized she had been dreaming
