Anne Hathaway Plays Penelope
In The Odyssey, Hathaway is Penelope, Odysseus’ wife and the queen of Ithaca. Penelope is at home while her husband Odysseus is away after the Trojan War. She is harassed by men trying to marry her.
The character of Hathaway by extension is thus an extension of the theme of Odysseus’ trek home.
The film features Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland as their son Telemachus, and Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous in love with Penelope. [IMDb][2]
Universal Will Campaign Hathaway as Supporting Actress
By campaigning in the Supporting Actress category, Hathaway will now be pushed for recognition against her fellow nominees in the supporting race.
This is a campaign position rather than an Oscar nomination. The actual nominations for the Oscars will be announced by the Academy as voting has taken place.

Hathaway Returns to the Oscar Conversation
Hathaway is already an Oscar winner in the same category.

The Odyssey is directed and written by Christopher Nolan. He is also the producer with Emma Thomas.

Hathaway has been incredibly busy in recent weeks.
The actor has been all over promoting her new book, Verity, which is being adapted for the big screen, and she and husband Adam Shulman are now expecting their third child together. ([People.com][7])
She has also been in the middle of many other big projects, which has made 2026 such an unusually hectic year for her.
At least, not just yet, “The Odyssey” is her top awards season priority.
What the Oscar Campaign Means
The decision on category from Universal gives direction as to how the studio will market the part to Oscar voters.
It also puts her in the company of numerous veterans and in what could be a hotly competitive race for Supporting Actress. But an awards campaign is not to be mistaken for an actual nomination – we’ll have to wait until the Academy announces its nominees before we know if Hathaway makes the cut.
Within The Odyssey campaign this also reflects the studio’s desire to push a number of different showings for the film during award season.
Hathaway as Penelope & Morton as Circe This will make it interesting that the movie has two actresses you’ll see getting push in the same award race, both of which are being campaigned for.
