Baba Ramdev Faces Potential Arrest Over Misleading Advertisement Controversy

Baba Ramdev is an outstanding yoga guru and one of the cofounders of Patanjali Ayurved, which has witnessed a remarkable impact on India’s health and wellness sector. Legal action has been initiated against him because of wrongly advertised lies that Patanjali products can cure patients with diabetes and asthma diseases. These statements could be violative of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. The Supreme Court of India has taken serious note of these violations. Contempt proceedings have been initiated against Ramdev and Patanjali’s managing director, Acharya Balkrishna. Though apologies have been issued, the court has remained unsatisfied with the seriousness of the contempt. This included a criminal case filed against Ramdev and Balkrishna in Kozhikode, Kerala, for some similar allegations, and bailable warrants were issued against the duo for failing to appear in court. Different public reactions have followed such legal steps and, by implication, have far-reaching consequences on trust in traditional medicine or the control of advertising health products in India.
