THE TWO MILLION DOLLAR TAKEOVER: If you’re gonna drop almost $2 million on a party, you’re bound to break a few eggs. Dua Lipa and Callum Turner proved that this week by throwing a humungous three-day wedding celebration in Sicily which, as we speak, is absolutely dominating the entire damn news cycle. They already had the civil ceremony in London on 30 May at the Old Marylebone Town Hall.
She wore a simple white Schiaparelli skirt suit. Italy was their enormous wedding celebration blowout. They booked Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria just outside Palermo. It’s an absolutely huge 18th-century mansion that some people even refer to as a small Versailles.
This was some serious, serious operations.
As soon as the lovebirds touched down on the island, they began moving a massive team of planners to turn the historic estate into a private fortress. FEATHERS, BEADS AND HEAVY FASHION: The bride didn’t come to play. The custom Chanel Haute Couture gown was a huge, monumental occasion as Matthieu Blazy had never designed a bridal gown for the fashion house before this particular instant.
But oh my word, this one has to be seen to be believed. Thegown featured an absolutely enormous circular train – that’s 25,000 feathers on the train alone – while roughly 480,000 beads were sewn onto the fabric itself by Paris atelier artists over months ofsecret fittings, topped off by a dramatic feathered hair piece that seamlessly blended into a long, embroidered veil. Turner paid homage but kept it a little more subtle by turning up in a custom black single-breasted wool jacket by Louis Vuitton.
The tux itself was designed by Pharrell Williams, and the actor completed his look with a vivid red peony brooch on the lapel to break up the darkness of the attire.
PISSSED OFF LOCALS AND BARRICADED STREETS: Unfortunately not everyone was delighted to have the global music megastar and her handsome actor beau invade the quaint Sicilian streets. Some 16,000 citizens protested against their opulent wedding celebrations by scrawling ‘our square is not your living room’ and ‘Palermo is not for the rich’ in red graffiti on the walls surrounding popular squares such as Piazza Croce and Quattro Canti. To avoid similar protests taking over the main public spaces, including four historic squares and several ancient streets – the production team effectively sealed off large swathes of Palermo. Organisers even compensated the local authorities around ten thousand dollars, which was distributed as public service compensations.
Local residents had been warned to keep their curtains drawn or face compensation of $1,000 but they said this amount was ‘an insult’.
Small business owners, already suffering after the impact of Covid, watched their lucrative wedding weekend evaporate. One owner stated they couldn’t even “walk to our bakery on our own doorstep” as private security details, consisting of over 50 bodyguards hired in Rome and London, formed “human barricades” to restrict access. A Temporary no-drone zone over Palermo’s sky enforced for the entire weekend added to the unease.
“Mayor’sIgnoring The Backlash”. The mayor defended the lavish celebrations – stating having global stars at his beloved hometown “is a matter of pride”. A HEAVYWEIGHT GUEST ROSTER: Within the stone walls, things were of course much more glamorous.
The A-listguest list reads exactly like a post-Grammys after-party, with fellow musiciansCharli XCX, who attended with her producer husband George Daniel, andMark Ronson, alongside his girlfriendGrace Gummer.
Theabsolute highlight of the wedding ceremonywaswhenSir Elton John, who was supported by his husbandDavid Furnish, serenaded thelove birds by singing “Your Song”as they stood together, surrounded by flowers. He finished it with a joke: “Thank you. Thank you, you guys are very lovely and I want to thank your love – may it always blossom! Thank you so much.
And congratulations!”
Guests dined on dishes by 1989 Michelin-starred chef Tony Lo Coco, who opted to avoid classic catering fare opting for hearty Sicilian food such as deep fried potato balls, chickpea fritters, anelletti alla norma pasta dish, cassata and classic cannoli. The 30-minute fireworks show illuminating the Palermo night sky above the Mediterranean concluded the festivities on July 1. THE DECONSTRUCTED WEDDING TREND: WhileLipha’s big fat Italian wedding is a showstoppingevent that dominated the news, it’s thelatest craze in weddings called ‘Deconstructed weddings,’ where events are spread over many countries and more than just three days. They began their nine day celebrations nine days before with a civil ceremony in London on 30 May and later followed it up with a grand welcome party the day before the wedding at the Piazza Victoria, Palermo’s principal central square.
She wore a Custom Leather Bottega Veneta outfit that bared her open back. She even went all the way as far as bringing out bookshelves to be part of the decor which was in commemoration of meeting her now husband while they both read the SAME novel by Hernn Daz. Afterwards,Lipha and Turner reportedly disappeared and were seen several days later vacationing near Catania at a luxury villa, before jetting off on a tour of the Amalfi Coast and concluding their trip in Rome.
