EA Announces 400 Job Cuts Across Its Business
Reports citing people familiar with the company’s plans say the restructuring at EA will impact approximately 3% of its employees.
Among the these of about 400 closing, over 50 are related to Bio Ware.
The company said the decision was part of a broader goal to focus investment on projects with better long-term commercial opportunities.
In a message to staff, EA Chief Operating Officer David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber wrote that the gaming industry was evolving quickly.
They referred to the rise in competition, the changing behavior of players and the proliferation of entertainment options consumers have.
EA said it wanted to put the bulk of its teams, technology and investment into its biggest franchises.
Affected employees will also be offered assistance by the company to look for another role within EA, it added.
Nevertheless, reorganising the studio will result in hundreds of staff losing their current jobs – including the developer of one of the best-known titles in the company’s back catalogue.

Bio Ware Confirms Closure After More Than 30 Years
Bio Ware was created in 1995 and became one of the most famous developer of story-driven role-playing games.
The studio developed its reputation through Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
It was one of many Bio Ware games where dialogue and relationships between characters, rather than just action, were central to the experience.
Often players could decide how their characters would act and what would happen in any conflicts.
These features helped establish a loyal audience.
Comment: EA purchased Bio Ware in 2007, following which the studio continued to create major role-playing games.
Nevertheless, in recent years, commercial struggles and internal changes occurred.
Mass Effect: Andromeda, which debuted in 2017, was met with an mixed reception. Anthem, which arrived in 2019, failed to make a splash as a live-service game.
The latest published work by the studio was Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024). It was not as successful commercially for EA as the studio’s previous work.
The studio had announced its closure and the conclusion of work on the next Mass Effect on October 21 through a post on Bio Ware’s official website.
The news brought to an end the story of a company that had left its mark on the world of role-playing games for decades.

What Happened to the Next Mass Effect Game?
The following Mass Effect game was in the works for several years.
Bio Ware had teased returning to the sci-fi universe that established the franchise.
It was a title slated to carry on the series after Mass Effect: Andromeda.
There wasn’t a fixed date for when the game was going to be launched however.
EA’s October 21 announcement confirmed the project was early on in development when the company would be dropping its financial support.
EA told the BBC in internal email that a small team had been working on the game.
This was the cause of the direct closure of Bio Ware, according to the company.
This is different from an ordinary delay.
A postponed game is still in the works.
A cancelled game is a game that no longer has a continued development path on its original plan.
EA has said nothing about a new studio jumping into the game.
Hence, don’t take for granted that the game will get released by someone else and the work it has done so far will be finished.
Why Is Mass Effect So Important to Players?
The primary Mass Effect came out in 2007.
It created Commander Shepard, a human military officer struggling with the political complications and deadly threats facing the galaxy.
The series blended sf-fiction thematic with fight, exploration, and role-playing options.
Among its most unique features was the fact that decisions could be transferred from one game to the next.
A decision taken in the debut title could have an impact on other entries in the series.
They released the original trilogy in 2012: their last entry was Mass Effect 3.
Despite the controversy created by the conclusion, the franchise was still significant.
In 2017, Andromeda set Mass Effect in a new galaxy with a new cast of characters.
In 2021, Bio Ware launched the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a remaster of the first trilogy.
PlayStation players, the next game was a chance to revisit that familiar world with an engine update and a new narrative.
That’s why today’s cancellation means we won’t be receiving the planned extension that the game Bio Ware had been working on.
Did EA’s $55 Billion Acquisition Influence the Decision?
EA’s restructuring comes after it was purchased by a consortium headed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
The deal, worth around $55 billion, was completed in August 2026.
Also, the consortium comprised of Affinity Partners and private equity firm Silver Lake.
The deal took EA private and was highly leveraged.
The deal was reported to have $18 billion in debt involved.
This has raised the question as to whether stress on finances in the aftermath of the purchase played a role in the layoffs and studios shutting down.
However, EA did not clearly connect the Bio Ware issue with the acquisition.
The company, in its circular to the employees however, highlighted on the changing market conditions and the fact that the company had narrowed down to lesser projects.
Thus, it would be erroneous to assert as a fact that the acquisition was the trigger for the closing of Bio Ware.
The restructuring happened post the transaction, but the available public statements do not infer a direct causative link.

Which EA Games Will Continue Development?
Despite the end of Bio Ware, EA has announced that there are some other big projects that are under development.
The firm will also pour money into the Battlefield franchise, and new gameplay experiences for Apex Legends.
EA also reiterated ongoing work on the next Star Wars Jedi game and Marvel’s Iron Man.
The publisher is uniting Respawn Entertainment and DICE for a new big project.
No, EA continues to include a large sections of the business.
The company has announced an upcoming new American football experience codenamed Project Gridiron. Along with this project, they will continue the fighting franchise Fight Night.
These decisions demonstrate that EA is not backing away from big budget games.
Rather, it is choosing not to pursue additional projects.
But for Bio Ware, the restructuring has led to shutdown rather than downsizing its development team.

What Happens to the Mass Effect Franchise Rights?
Bio Ware’s departure doesn’t necessarily indicate that the intellectual property for Mass Effect has been eliminated.
The franchise remains part of EA’s portfolio.
Copyright, trademarks and other intellectual property rights usually remains when the studio that developed the game goes bankrupt.
EA might even give another developer the ability to make a future Mass Effect game.
The company could have sold the franchise rights to other entertainment ventures.
