DeepSeek has been the new challenge that the AI domination of OpenAI and its favorite software, ChatGPT, faced. Always a market leader in the industry, whether for free or for paid subscription plans, the popularity of ChatGPT was growing with every passing day. In contrast, DeepSeek was giving away its model, Dark Seek-R1, free of charge. The open-access strategy led to high penetration, topping all charts within both U.S. and U.K. The pricing for DeepSeek’s API is low-cost, being a fraction of what OpenAI charges, thus attracting businesses and developers searching for cost-effective AI solutions. Benchmark tests suggest that DeepSeek-R1 performs at least on par with, or in some technical tasks, it surpasses ChatGPT, which only further erodes the market place for ChatGPT. So, OpenAI is forced to either change its pricing model or improve its offerings to retain the users. This would open the gates to mass adoption of AI, which gives cheaper and more accessible AI solutions, thus impacting a larger section of the audience, which is good for competition and innovation.
