Indian Basketball’s Battle for Existence – No Stars, Coaches or Courts

It’s an international game, yet in India, basketball is unable to catch up with cricket or even kabaddi, which is far smaller. This is once again due to several reasons-scant talent of professional players, not enough world-class sportsmen, too fewer quality coaches, inferior structures, and participation levels being low. Basketball remains on the periphery of India’s sporting landscape with just fewer than 500 professionals, less than 1,000 functional courts, and zero media coverage, except for a few sporadic events. These initiatives, along with the like of NBA Academies and the Khelo initiative, are in place, however, systemic overhaul through grassroots developments, better training, and improvements in infrastructure are well needed for sustainability and growth within the sport within India.
