Kanwar Yatras are annual marches on foot in north India of Shivabhaktas ( worshippers of the Hindu god Shiva ) in the monsoon month of ‘Saavan’ ( July-August ).

Participants in these marches, called kanwarias, usually wearing saffron ( a colour regarded holy by Hindus ) clothes, carry Ganges water from Haridwar, Gangotri, and other holy places, to their home town or village ( often hundreds of miles away ) and offer it to Lord Shiva in a temple.

Since several years reports have come of kanwarias blocking traffic on roads, causing noise pollution, and many behaving like hooligans, ruffians, and hoodlums, as if they are a law unto themselves

This year some of them even beat up policemen

Other incidents of vandalism by kanwarias are given below :

Eatery and Food Disputes: Kanwarias have ransacked dhabas and food stalls after allegedly finding non-vegetarian items or onions in meals, or over disputes regarding the displayed identity of shop owners.

Vehicle Damage: Groups have smashed cars, pickup trucks, and buses after minor road contact or collisions with a kanwar

Attacks on Stores: Incidents in towns like Haridwar, Meerut, and parts of the National Capital Region include individuals damaging optical stores, general shops, or liquor vends.

Policemen, who are often present during such incidents, usually turn a blind eye to these outrages, perhaps fearing that if they interfere they may be suspended by the pro-Hindu BJP government.The sad part of the story is that instead of clamping down on such acts of hooliganism and vandalism, the government has in fact encouraged them, thus indicating to the kanwarias that they can break the law with impunity Flowers were showered from a helicopter on the kanwarias, and the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, welcomed them by washing their feet.

The UP Government has also announced that it will shower flowers from helicopters on kanwarias

The Indian Constitution says that India is a secular country. Secularism means that religion is a private affair, and that the state will be neutral in the matter of religion. So are the acts of the state governments of Uttarakhand, UP, and some other states not unconstitutional ?

It seems that the Constitution has become just a scarecrow and a piece of paper in India
