Merit My Foot

In his book ‘Merit My Foot– reply to anti-reservation racists’ published by Dalit Sahitya Academy, Bangalore in 1987, V.T. Rajshekhar, Editor of Dalit Voice, strongly condemned the concept of merit in admissions to educational institutions and appointment on posts, alleging this is only an upper caste trick, and he strongly supported caste reservations.

I am strongly opposed to caste based reservations, and I have explained in my articles below that such reservations are only a political ploy to get Scheduled Caste and OBC votes, and are in fact doing great harm to SCs and OBCs :

I have been motivated to write this new article by a whatsapp message I received today from a Professor of Geography who holds a doctorate from a Western university, and has been teaching abroad for the last 11 years. He belongs to UP, and wants to return to India.

He has written to me :

” Sir, I want to return to India and take up a teaching post. I belong to the general category, but universities in India advertise a professor’s vacancy usually only for SC/ST or OBC candidates. A general category candidate cannot apply, even if he is a Harvard or Oxford topper and number 1 in research publications. Out of 10 vacancies, only 1 or 2 are available for general category candidates, and these too are usually filled up by persons lacking in merit, because some Minister directs the Vice Chancellor to appoint him.

Wherever I applied, I got a message ” This post is reserved ” or ” You are not eligible to apply ”.

I have been a Professor in Geography for several years, specialized in GIS ( Geographical Information System, which analyzes satellite data and remote sensing ). I am a qualified UGC-NET and SLET ( State Level Eligibilty Test ). I have several research papers published in Q1 journals ( which are the 25 top journals in the world ).

Yet I am eliminated for even being considered because I am from an upper caste, and instead SC/ST or OBC candidates having poor merit will be appointed. What will such non meritorious persons teach ? Is this not injustice to their students ? And is this not one of the factors keeping our country backward ? ”. the words ’25 top’ please add the word scientific
