Mirzapur: The Movie is enjoying a strong theatrical run, but lead actor Pankaj Tripathi says the team deliberately avoided turning the film’s box-office numbers into a constant social-media campaign.

Tripathi, who reprises his popular role of Akhandanand “Kaleen” Tripathi, has praised producer Ritesh Sidhwani for creating an environment in which the actors were not pressured to repeatedly promote the film’s collections or celebrate every new box-office milestone online.
The comments come as Mirzapur: The Movie approaches the ₹300-crore mark at the worldwide box office, making the big-screen adaptation of the popular streaming franchise one of the notable Hindi theatrical successes of 2026.
Pankaj Tripathi Says There Was ‘Zero Pressure’
In an interaction reported by Hindustan Times, Pankaj Tripathi spoke about Ritesh Sidhwani’s approach after the movie reached theatres.
According to Tripathi, once daily collections began arriving, there was no expectation from the producer that the cast should continuously publicise those figures on their social-media accounts.
“There was zero pressure” to showcase the film’s collection milestones online, Tripathi said while discussing the producer’s approach.
The actor explained that the makers instead wanted the film’s success to spread organically, particularly through audience reactions and word of mouth.
Tripathi said he was impressed by this approach because it allowed the film and its audience response to remain at the centre of the conversation rather than making every new collection figure a promotional event.
A Different Approach to Box-Office Promotion
Box-office numbers have become an important part of film marketing in recent years. Producers, actors and official movie accounts frequently share posters announcing milestones such as ₹50 crore, ₹100 crore or ₹200 crore.
With Mirzapur: The Movie, however, Tripathi says producer Ritesh Sidhwani did not put such promotional pressure on the actors.
That is particularly noteworthy considering that the film has generated substantial theatrical business.
The movie opened at approximately ₹25.75 crore net in India and ended its first week with around ₹148.45 crore, according to figures reported by Hindustan Times based on box-office tracking data.
By the end of Day 12, the movie had reached approximately ₹195.70 crore net in India. Its worldwide gross was reported at around ₹281.14 crore, putting the ₹300-crore global milestone within reach.
Mirzapur: The Movie Box Office Collection
The theatrical performance is significant because Mirzapur originated as a streaming franchise rather than a conventional theatrical film series.
The movie was released in cinemas on September 4, 2026, bringing characters familiar to OTT audiences onto the big screen.
Its opening weekend demonstrated the strength of the franchise’s existing audience. The film crossed ₹100 crore worldwide during its first weekend and reached approximately ₹213 crore globally within seven days.
The movie continued adding to its total during the second week despite the expected weekday slowdown.
By Day 12, its reported collections stood at:
India net: approximately ₹195.70 crore
Worldwide gross: approximately ₹281.14 crore
The numbers indicate that the movie has successfully converted a substantial part of the franchise’s streaming popularity into theatrical footfall.
Mirzapur Makes the Jump From OTT to Cinemas
The success of Mirzapur: The Movie is also important from an industry perspective.
Mirzapur began as a streaming series in 2018 and developed a large following over three seasons. The franchise became known for its crime-driven story, power struggles and characters such as Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Tripathi.
Moving an established OTT property into cinemas carried an obvious question: would viewers who had previously watched the franchise at home be willing to buy theatre tickets for a movie based on the same universe?
The film’s early box-office performance suggests that a popular streaming franchise can attract a substantial theatrical audience when there is enough interest in its characters and fictional world.
Gulf News similarly noted the significance of the film’s performance as an example of a streaming property successfully moving to the theatrical market.
Familiar Characters Return to the Big Screen
Pankaj Tripathi returns as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Ali Fazal reprises his role as Guddu Pandit.
Divyenndu, Rasika Dugal, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Shweta Tripathi and Abhishek Banerjee are among the other familiar faces associated with the Mirzapur universe who appear in the movie.
The film also expands its ensemble with actors including Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan and Sonal Chauhan.
The movie takes viewers back into the violent power struggles of Mirzapur while expanding the story for the theatrical format.
Who Made Mirzapur: The Movie?
Mirzapur: The Movie is directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna.
It is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment. Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani are credited as co-producers.
The movie represents the first major theatrical expansion of the Mirzapur franchise after three seasons of the streaming series.
Pankaj Tripathi Appreciates Ritesh Sidhwani’s Approach
For Tripathi, however, the film’s commercial performance appears to be only one part of the experience.
His comments highlight something less visible behind a successful theatrical release: the pressure actors can face to participate in the commercial promotion of a movie even after its release.
Instead of asking the cast to continuously share collection posters and milestones, Tripathi said Sidhwani allowed the film’s performance to speak for itself.
The actor particularly appreciated the decision to rely on organic conversations and word of mouth rather than constantly projecting box-office numbers.
It is an interesting approach for a film that has, ironically, generated plenty of impressive numbers to promote.
With Mirzapur: The Movie moving towards ₹300 crore worldwide, its theatrical journey has also become a test case for whether India’s biggest streaming franchises can successfully expand onto the big screen.
For Pankaj Tripathi, though, one of the memorable aspects of that journey appears to be that the actors were allowed to focus on the film rather than becoming promoters of its daily box-office spreadsheet.
