In a significant development following the massive paper leak scandal surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical courses held on May 5, 2024, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a re-examination for NEET UG 2024. This decision comes amid growing outrage and demands for justice from social and political activists, alongside a thorough investigation by the Bihar Police’s Economic Offences Unit (EOU).
Background of the Scandal
The scandal, which was exposed by the EOU of Bihar Police, involved a sophisticated network of brokers who allegedly leaked question papers to candidates in exchange for exorbitant sums ranging from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. These candidates were reportedly accommodated in lodges in Patna, where they were given access to the leaked papers under the guise of official NEET-UG examination papers.
The investigation revealed that organized gangs with a history of such activities were involved, operating from locations like the Learn Boys Hostel and Learn Play School in Khemnichak, Patna. Thirteen individuals, including organizers and parents, have been arrested so far, while the mastermind, Sanjiv Singh, remains at large.
Social and Political Response
The scandal has prompted widespread condemnation and calls for a re-examination from various quarters. Dr. Vivek Pandey, an RTI activist, and Mukesh Bangra, a concerned citizen, have been vocal about the need for immediate action, citing past instances where exams were canceled due to leaks.
NTA’s Response
In light of the investigation and public outcry, the NTA has decided to conduct the NEET UG 2024 examination again. This move aims to restore the integrity of the examination process and ensure a fair chance for all candidates. The re-examination will encompass all candidates, addressing concerns about the fairness and transparency of the original examination.
Investigation and Legal Actions
The Bihar Police have intensified their investigation, focusing on the activities in various centers in Patna. An eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by EOU SP Madan Kumar Anand is spearheading the probe. The police are determined to apprehend all individuals involved, including those holding influential positions.
Impact and Future Measures
The decision to conduct a re-examination underscores the seriousness of the breach and the authorities’ commitment to upholding the examination’s credibility. The scandal has also prompted calls for more stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future, ensuring the integrity of important competitive exams like NEET.
The re-examination of NEET UG 2024 is expected to be a critical step in restoring confidence in the examination system and providing a level playing field for all aspiring medical students.
