Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” is Overrated and Slow as Hell
The film, directed by Payal Kapadia, is entitled “All We Imagine as Light.” It is slow-moving with introspection but about three women’s lives within Mumbai that focuses more on the inner conflicts and uses very few lines with extended meditative shots intended to convey emotions. While it is artistic in its vision and has received a plethora of nominations at the Golden Globes, the lack of narrative tension and poor pacing of the film have turned away a wider audience. The movie’s deliberate slowness and minimalist approach only serves to please the niche elite, frustrating the general audience in its monotonous and emotionally detached storytelling.
