India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority, FSSAI, has labeled packaged drinking water and mineral water as “high-risk food” products and is putting manufacturers under higher annual audits and inspections. This is after the government had scrapped the mandatory BIS certification in October 2024. With more than 30 billion liters of bottled water consumed each year, the move looks to address contamination risks, strengthen safety protocols, and curb counterfeit products. While big brands like Bisleri can adapt to these regulations, smaller players will find it challenging. This shift is going to increase consumer safety but needs effective enforcement and greater public awareness to be successful.
