Following protracted ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki populations, President’s Rule imposed in Manipur seems to be a political move by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) meant to shift focus from its shortcomings in government. President’s Rule was essentially symbolic since both the state and central governments were under BJP rule, therefore limiting their autonomy. This action barely addresses the underlying ethnic conflicts, property disputes, and economic inequalities driving the conflict—which has claimed over 250,000 lives and displaced about 60,000 people since May 2023.
