With a CinemaScore of B– and a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “Captain America: Brave New World” has received a mixed response from reviewers and viewers alike. Extensive reshoots following bad test screenings dogged the movie’s development and resulted in delays for its release. Critics have highlighted a complicated story devoid of the thrills of past editions, clumsy and explanatory speech, and inconsistent visual effects—especially with regard to poor CGI in some situations. The political topics, which would have added complexity, were not investigated enough, therefore producing a surface treatment. Furthermore, the addition of fresh characters—Red Hulk, among others—did not live up to fan expectations, and the movie battled to define Sam Wilson as Captain America as apart from Steve Rogers’ history. Notwithstanding these problems, Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford’s performances were commended but inadequate to offset the other flaws of the movie.
