The controversy, however, pertains to Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour presented by the Freestyle Chess Players Club, FCPC, an organization that drew flak from the International Chess Federation, FIDE, against the “World Championship” which this series masquerades itself as. More so, panned by the latter as being an infringement against the official championships under its roof, such as Chess960. Magnus Carlsen, one of the owners of the FCPC claims, that the latter bodies stifle progress and hold the playing members of the tour in the threat of penalty. FIDE, in its turn, denies these allegations and proclaims its readiness for a “World Championship” title abolition. The very problem turns the spotlight on the general conflict between old policies and newcomers in contemporary chess.
