Declared as part of a strategic move toward AI-driven operations, IBM has announced the layoff of 9,000 American workers. The layoffs mostly affect IBM’s Cloud Classic business, where BlueGenix, an artificial intelligence system, has automated server maintenance and cloud data migration instead of hand labor. This shift aligns with IBM’s $2.5 billion AI infrastructure investment set for 2024. CEO Arvind Krishna underlined that the future employment of the company depends mostly on artificial intelligence. Although IBM is generating 4,000 AI-related jobs in India, the action draws attention to the rising tech industry automation trend and raises questions on workforce displacement.
