Human activities, such as pollution, unregulated fishing, and industrial practices such as ship scrapping, are fast degrading the Indian Ocean ecosystem. Plastic waste, oil spills, and agricultural runoff are all significant contributors to ocean degradation, but lack of regulations on the part of the industries involved, such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi, exacerbate the problem. This is degrading local fishing communities, tourism, and biodiversity, leading to economic losses and threats to marine life. Despite the existence of such laws, governmental negligence and weak enforcement have failed to check these issues, and thus the future of the Indian Ocean and its surrounding communities is at risk.
