Significant debate has been generated by recent comments made by Chairman SN Subrahmanyan of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) calling for the elimination of welfare programs and labor legislation. His point of view not only questions trade unions’ historical fight but also runs the danger of aggravating worker exploitation. This paper explores the consequences of Subrahmanyan’s position and emphasizes the widening income gap in L&T whereby top management pay has increased disproportionately relative to those of ordinary employees. Moreover, it looks at claims of underpayment and managerial mistreatment inside the corporation, stressing the critical part social programs and labor regulations play in defending workers’ rights.
