Although suicide is a very alarming problem in India, official figures sometimes hide the actual scope of the crisis. Reported suicide rates in areas like Kota, a coaching center for kids getting ready for competitive tests, are far lower than what many residents feel to be accurate. Official data for 2023 show that, a 38% decrease from the 23 occurrences in 2022, 17 students died by suicide. Residents, however, believe the true count is far higher—perhaps ranging from 60 to 70 suicides annually. Underreporting of these cases by the government is considered to be done in order to uphold Kota’s coaching capital reputation. Underreporting suicides is not restricted to Kota; rather, it is a phenomenon found all throughout India when government policies, legal challenges, and cultural shame discourage data. The reality of suicide rates in India, the causes of underreporting, and the effects of suppressing the actual numbers are investigated in this paper.
