On reading them I received a whatsapp message from a Kashmiri, Amir Rashid Khan ( email [email protected] ), presently working in Muscat, Oman, suggesting a mazhaar be built for the great Kashmiri poet Habba Khatun.

Being myself a Kashmiri, I was delighted by the idea. Habba Khatun, known as the Nightingale of Kashmir, is a famous figure in Kashmiri literature, and Kashmiris still sing her songs enthusiastically.

However, I told Amir saheb that I checked up on google and learnt that there is no positively ascertained grave of Habba Khatun, on which a mazhaar can be built. There are 4 places allegedly having her grave

So what I would like to be built is a memorial or cenotaph in Srinagar honouring her, and a library and museum attached to it, containing all her contributions to Kashmiri literature, her biography, etc, as well as literary works of other Kashmiris.

We will call it the Habba Khatun Institute, of which I will be the patron. Later, I will appoint the Chairman, Vice Chairmen, Gen Secy, Joint Secretaries, Treasurer, etc after consulting relevant people. Since we will need funds to build this institute, the office bearers must be people who have impeccable integrity, are totally upright and dedicated, and who will account for every rupee received and spent, so that there are no allegations of financial misdeeds.

I told Amir sahib we must organise a team of dedicated and totally upright Kashmiris for this work ( just as we have Mehdian Organization for the mazhaar of Mir Anees in Lucknow ), and then approach the Kashmir Government, including Omar Abdullah, for financial and other help. The Kashmiri public, including Kashmiris settled abroad, can also be asked for help in this connection.
