The lady doth protest too much

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose was recently interviewed by Navika Kumar on Times Now channel

But before analyzing the interview it would be interesting to see the background of Sagarika Ghose.

She was a journalist since 1991, and in 2018 said that she would never accept a political ticket or join a political party.

Now many people say this, but later enter politics. But Sagarika went much further, and was vociferous and raucous about it. She sermonised that journalists should not accept a Rajya Sabha berth, as that would compromise their independence.

In several tweets, Sagarika Ghose had categorically asserted that she would never accept any Rajya Sabha ticket, adding that she can give this in writing. Thus in March 2018, Ghose had tweeted, “haha! I will never accept any RS (Rajya Sabha) ticket or PS ticket or CS ticket from any political party, sir. That I can give you in writing and you can save this tweet.”

She also tweeted, “Journalists should stay away from politics & loyalty to any political party. Compromising independence is the worst thing scribes can do to themselves. Lets strengthen India’s civil society,  strengthen liberal democracy, work for justice. Let the netas be naked in their hamaam!”

In 2024 she made a 180 degrees u-turn and jumped into the hamaam, by joining Mamata Banerjee’s TMC and was made a Rajya Sabha MP.  So much of her own morality and ethics, about which she waxes eloquent a lot these days.

Now coming back to the interview.

Sagarika attacked the BJP, saying it was autocratic, and uses ‘saam daam dand bhed’. She also said that the right to protest has always been sacred in West Bengal, implying that there was a right to protest during Mamata Banerjee’s 15 year rule as Chief Minister ( from 2011 to 2026 ).

But Sagarika was perhaps a bit economical of the truth. She did not mention that Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of Jadavpur University was got arrested and jailed by Mamata in 2012 on a frivolous charge of sharing her cartoon on the social media. He was later acquitted by the Calcutta High Court

The same year in August, 2012 Mamata got a farmer Siladitya Choudhary arrested only because he had said in her public meeting that she had done nothing for farmers

When some people said Jai Shri Ram on a street in Kolkata, Mamata fumed, and threatened to get them arrested.

Numerous other such incidents can be mentioned , which show that far from being democratic and tolerant of criticism, she was vindictive, and could brook no criticism of herself. She had built up an army of goons, like Hitler’s SA and SS, which she used to terrorize any opposition, and extort money from businessmen and shopkeepers.

Sagarika made no mention of all this in her interview, and all she said about the wrongdoings under Mamata’s rule was that it was ” jhootha propaganda ”.

When asked why so many MLAs and MPs are leaving TMC, Sagarika put the blame on ‘moral weakness’. But where was her own morality when a reign of terror imposed by that Empress of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, was prevailing in West Bengal, and yet her mouth was sealed ? Obviously because Mamata had made her an MP, with all its huge benefits and perks, and thus bought her soul and conscience ( assuming she ever had one ).

Sagarika repeatedly said in the interview that the vote was stolen in the state assembly elections. It may be true that there were serious irregularities in the electoral process. But why did Sagarika not talk of the alienation from the TMC of the 71 % Hindus, because Mamata brazenly practised Muslim appeasement to get their 28% votes, which made a large section of Hindus to go over to the BJP ?

Sagarika’s claim that there was inner party democracy in the TMC is laughable. To say that there was democracy within the TMC is as ridiculous as saying there was democracy in the Nazi Party. Mamata was the be all and the end all in the TMC, like Hitler in the Nazi Party. She anointed her arrogant nephew Abhishek Banerjee as her successor, thus even alienating loyalists like Kalyan Banerjee, who recently said he cannot be in the TMC with Abhishek. The TMC split is not because the TMC lost the elections ( as Sagarika claimed in the interview ), but because Mamata tried to thrust her worthless, empty headed nephew down the throats of the TMC rank and file.

Towards the end of the interview Sagarika claimed that the TMC will defeat the BJP in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. The question she does not answer, however, is whether the TMC will survive till then, or even for a month from now, in the light of current developments ?

In the interview Sagarika claimed she is a loyalist of Mamata Banerjee. She obviously said that because by making her an MP Mamata has greatly benefited her in various ways. But the shameless person who having said she will never enter politics, jumps into it at the first opportunity, and becomes a member of the Rajya Sabha, though she had repeatedly said she will never seek a Rajya Sabha ticket, is an expert acrobat and trapeze artist without any principles or ethics, an Aya Ram Gaya Ram, who will swing towards whichever direction yields the best prospects.

So I would not be surprised if Sagarika joins the BJP washing machine one day
