The true heroes in the Vinesh Phogat episode
By Justice Katju
Many people, including some top Indian politicians, prominent mediapersons, sportspersons and others have exalted, applauded and acclaimed Vinesh Phogat, the Indian wrestler who was disqualified in the Olympic finals for being 100 grams overweight. She has been described as being a victim of a ‘saajish’ ( conspiracy ), and people are falling head over heel in praising this ‘Bharat ki Beti’ who, according to them, has been so grievously wronged.

I regret I cannot join in this cacophony, hot air, babel, blandishment, hokum, cajolery, and empty accolades.
In my opinion the true heroes in this entire episode are the Olympic officials, who insisted that the rules must be strictly followed.
In law there is a maxim ” Dura lex, sed lex ”, which means ” The law is hard, but it is the law ”.
Whether you are overweight by 100 grams or 1 gram, it is all the same : you are disqualified. Hence instead of weeping over Vinesh we should praise the Olympic officials who acted correctly in strictly enforcing the law and rightly disqualifying her..
I have already expressed my opinion in the article below
https://indicanews.com/disqualification-of-vinesh-phogat/
I have said therein that it is entirely Vinesh to blame for what happened, and it is silly and childish to say that there was a conspiracy. To talk of conspiracy is like a child, who on losing a game, says there was cheating.
My deep regret is that none of the politicians, mediapersons, etc have clearly said what I have said above. Instead, to show their ‘nationalism’, they have supported the ‘Bharat ki Beti’
