Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups had a massive opening day. The film crossed the ₹100 crore mark in India and looked set for a strong first weekend. But the second day has changed the picture quite sharply.

The Geetu Mohandas-directed film recorded a major fall in collections on Thursday, just a day after its release. Different trade trackers have put the Day 2 figure between ₹36.40 crore and ₹37.65 crore net in India. This means a drop of around 63 to 64 per cent from the ₹101.10 crore opening day figure.

One trade report, however, has put the fall much higher at around 70 per cent when comparing India gross figures. Bollywood Hungama estimated Day 2 India gross at about ₹45 crore, against roughly ₹120 crore on the first day.

The difference comes from the way different tracking platforms calculate and update their numbers. But the main point remains the same. Toxic has suffered a very big fall on its second day.

Toxic Opened With ₹101 Crore

Toxic reached theatres on August 26. It was Yash’s first major theatrical release after the huge success of KGF Chapter 2, so expectations around the film were already high.

The opening day numbers looked impressive.

According to Sacnilk, the film earned ₹101.10 crore net in India on Day 1 from 24,579 shows. Its India gross stood at around ₹120.75 crore, while the worldwide gross was reported at about ₹140.75 crore.

The Hindi version played an important part in that opening. It contributed around ₹55 crore on the first day, while the Kannada version made around ₹23.30 crore. Telugu also had a sizeable contribution at about ₹16 crore.

For Yash, the opening was another major milestone. He became the only Indian actor with two films opening above the ₹100 crore mark, following KGF Chapter 2.

So, after Day 1, there was plenty of reason for the makers and distributors to be happy.

Day 2 was a different story.

Collections Fell Sharply on Thursday

Toxic collected around ₹37.65 crore net in India on its second day, according to Sacnilk’s latest figures. That is a 62.8 per cent fall from the opening day’s ₹101.10 crore. The India net total after two days stood at ₹138.75 crore.

India Today’s figures were slightly lower, putting Day 2 at ₹36.40 crore net and the two-day India net total at ₹137.50 crore. The report also noted that the number of shows fell from 24,579 on Day 1 to 22,629 on Day 2. Overall occupancy dropped from 56.1 per cent to 26.6 per cent.

That fall in occupancy is important.

The film was still running across thousands of shows, but audiences were not turning up in the same numbers as they did on Wednesday. A huge opening followed by such a steep fall is usually something the trade watches closely.

Hindi Market Is Still Supporting the Film

The Hindi market remained the biggest contributor for Toxic on Day 2.

According to Sacnilk, the Hindi version collected around ₹24.25 crore net on Thursday. It had 26 per cent occupancy across 16,251 shows. The Kannada version earned around ₹8.50 crore from 1,678 shows, while its occupancy was much stronger at 51 per cent.

The Telugu version added around ₹3 crore. Tamil contributed ₹1.50 crore and Malayalam made around ₹40 lakh.

The figures show an interesting split.

The Hindi version is bringing in the larger amount of money because of the size of the market and the number of shows. But the Kannada version, which is the film’s original language, had considerably better occupancy.

That means the film still has a base in its home market. The bigger question is whether the Hindi audience can keep coming over the weekend.

Negative Response Has Become a Problem

Toxic has not received the kind of audience response that usually helps a big star vehicle maintain its opening-day momentum.

The film has received mixed to negative reactions from sections of the audience and critics. Complaints have included the long runtime, violent scenes, sexual content and the way the story develops. Online discussion around the film has also been quite divided.

There has also been attention around the film’s BookMyShow rating. Reports said the rating had reached around 5.6 before it was removed, adding another layer to the discussion around the audience response.

This matters because Toxic needed more than a strong fan-driven opening.

Yash has a large following after KGF, and a film can often get a big first day simply because fans want to see the star on the big screen. The second day gives a better indication of how much wider the audience is accepting the film.

In Toxic’s case, the fall has been steep.

Toxic Is Behind Other Big Pan-India Films

The Day 2 comparison with some recent blockbusters is also not favourable.

India Today reported that Dhurandhar 2 collected around ₹80.72 crore net on its second day. Pushpa 2 had made ₹93.80 crore, while KGF Chapter 2 collected around ₹90.50 crore and RRR earned about ₹86.70 crore on their respective Day 2 performances.

Toxic’s ₹36-38 crore range is far below those numbers.

At the same time, it is worth looking at the full picture. The film has already crossed ₹137 crore net in India in two days and is close to the ₹200 crore worldwide mark. Depending on the tracker, its worldwide gross after two days has been placed between roughly ₹185 crore and ₹191 crore.

So the film has not suddenly stopped earning money.

The issue is the speed at which the collections have come down.

What Happens Over the Weekend?

The next two days are important for Toxic.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday will show whether the film can recover after the Day 2 fall. A strong Saturday and Sunday could still improve its position, especially because the film has already made a large amount of money from the opening day.

Early Friday figures were also being watched closely. Moneycontrol reported that Toxic had collected around ₹14.20 crore net by 6 pm on Friday, although the final Day 3 figure was still to come at the time of its report.

The film also has a large cast, including Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth. It is set in Goa and follows a gangster story spread across the 1940s to the 1970s. Yash plays a dual role in the film.

For now, the numbers tell a very clear story.

Toxic opened at ₹101.10 crore net in India. On Day 2, it fell to around ₹36-38 crore according to major trackers. The drop is roughly 63-64 per cent on a net basis, while one trade estimate puts the India gross fall at around 70 per cent.

The weekend numbers will show whether the film can hold after that sudden fall.
