The much-awaited PlayStation 5 Pro or PS5 Pro is yet to be launched in India, and that’s after Sony worldwide launches. The company has suggested several reasons for the same such as compatibility issues of WiFi 7 technology.
Digging deeper into it, one can easily find a more tangible reason behind the smokescreen. The reasons for not launching the console were the hefty price, lacking any graphical advantage over the base PS5, and technical defects that could not be called a reason for the premium amount paid.
In fact, this post delves into why the PS5 Pro is not available in India, supported by detailed technical analysis of the hardware used in the console.
The Official Rationale of Playstation 5 Pro Absence: WiFi 7 Support
Sony has cited an incompatibility with WiFi 7 as the reason for delaying the PS5 Pro in India. WiFi 7, which is also referred to as IEEE 802.11be, is the next-generation wireless standard that promises ultra-high speeds, low latency, and greater network capacity. According to reports, the Indian infrastructure is not as available with full-fledged WiFi 7, and this would undermine the overall console online performance and multi-player gaming.
True as it is that WiFi 7 adoption in India is still nascent, this explanation does not hold up under scrutiny. Indian gamers are using wired internet connections or very robust WiFi 6 setups, which are more than enough for online gaming.
Consoles like Xbox Series X and even PS5 can function perfectly without relying on WiFi 7. The WiFi 7 argument thus appears more diversionary than a cause for concern.
The Real Reasons of Playstation 5 Pro Behind the Delay
1. Pricey Deals
The price difference between the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro will be a steep ₹25,000 to ₹30,000. For a country like India, which primarily depends on value for buying, this is an unattractive reason. Moreover, the PS5 is already battling stock shortages due to its current price point, and giving a more premium version would only work to alienate half of the market.
Comparison: The PS5 is priced around ₹55,000 in India, but the PS5 Pro will reportedly cost north of ₹80,000-₹85,000 after taxes and import duties. That puts the PS5 Pro competing with high-end gaming PCs in terms of pricing, which also offer higher customization and better long-term value.
Restricted Target Group: The Indian gaming market is expanding, but most gam- ers are opting for budget consoles or gaming PCs. The Indian market is not going to have enough premium enthusiasts prepared to pay extra for minimal upgrades in the current price-sensitive scenario.
2. Slight Upgrade in Graphics
For all this hype, the PS5 Pro was expected to deliver generational leaps in performance. Early reviews and teardowns, however, suggest that the graphical improvements are incremental rather than revolutionary.
4K Gaming Plateau: The Pro in the PS5 offers superior ray tracing and incrementally increased frame rates but remains marketed towards 4K resolution, which the base PS5 already hits with respectable performance. The difference between PS5 and PS5 Pro is pretty negligible for most players, especially on standard 4K TVs.
There will be limited developer support: Given that most of the users will employ the standard PS5, developers would not go out of their way to optimize games only for the PS5 Pro. Barring exclusive titles and major graphical enhancements, it is hard to sell the PS5 Pro.
3. Technical Issues
While Sony has not officially addressed technical faults in the PS5 Pro, industry insiders and early adopters have highlighted several issues that could have influenced its delayed Indian launch.
Overheating Concerns
The PS5 Pro has increased clock speeds for its GPU as well as enhanced hardware for ray tracing, which generates additional heat, beyond that of the standard PS5. One suspected problem with this design is said to be overheating, which supposedly causes throttling of performance in some cases.
India’s Climate Challenge: The diversity of climate and often hot weather in the nation can be worse for overheating. If there is no proper cooling solution, underperformance and potentially even damage to hardware may occur in extreme conditions.
Power Consumption
The Power PS5 Pro has a higher power consumption rate than the basic PS5. High-priced electricity at home in India may make high-power consumption consoles not as popular with cost-sensitive and environment-friendly consumers.
Disk Drive Failures
Early reports have shown that the 4K Blu-ray disk drive of the PS5 Pro has a higher failure rate than the regular PS5. Digital copies of the console exist, yet in India, gamers are still more dependent on physical game copies due to slower internet speeds and the cost effectiveness of digital downloads.
4. Market Competition
The Indian gaming market has seen an influx of competing consoles and gaming setups. Devices like the Xbox Series X and high-performance gaming PCs have already established a foothold, offering comparable performance to the PS5 Pro at similar or lower price points.
Xbox Game Pass Advantage: Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, bundled with the affordable Xbox Game Pass subscription, provides a more compelling value proposition for Indian gamers.
PC Gaming Growth: Also, the availability of cheap gaming PC parts has diverted possible customers from taking up consoles. For the price of a PS5 Pro, gamers can build PCs that outshine the console in raw graphical power.
Sony’s Misjudgment of the Indian Market
This move by Sony to postpone the PS5 Pro in India reveals a more extensive miscalculation of the gaming Indian market. With respect to citing WiFi 7 as the reason, the lack of articulation of the real problem: affordability, minimal performance increase, and technical inadequacies- was not highlighted.
Missed Opp; Sony could have stayed ahead in Indian market curves by offering PS5 users a trade-in deal and on bundling the PS5 Pro with exclusive titles and accessories.
Lack of Communication: The nebulous WiFi 7 excuse leaves Indian gamers frustrated, downplaying the real issues with price and value.
A Tough Sell for Playstation 5 Pro
Delayed launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro in India has little to do with WiFi 7. Real reasons, therefore, include a sky-high price, almost negligible graphical improvements, and unresolved technical issues. Here, value for money is always the number one priority for Indian gamers, and the PS5 Pro fails on that very count.
Sony needs to rethink its strategy for the Indian market, if it would like to carry on dominating this space. The real concerns-on pricing, technical reliability, and market competition need to be addressed by the time PS5 Pro or whatever iteration follows needs to come out. Until then, a regular PS5 is the more practical choice for Indian gamers.
