Global Governance Initiative: Empowering Youth for a Better Tomorrow
Introduction
India, the world’s largest democracy, has been shaped by the decisions of its leaders and elected representatives since gaining independence. However, a common challenge has been the lack of direct consultation with beneficiaries when implementing certain projects or welfare schemes. Despite the enthusiasm among youth to contribute to national growth, they often face obstacles such as limited opportunities, lack of skills, and inadequate mentorship. To address these issues, Shatakshi Sharma and Naman Shrivastava founded the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) in July 2018 in Delhi. This organization aims to bridge the gap between the government’s policy-making and the youth, aligning the younger generation with the nation’s development goals.
Founders’ Vision and Early Challenges
Shatakshi Sharma and Naman Shrivastava, both 27 at the time of GGI’s inception, envisioned an organization that would equip the youth with the necessary skills and opportunities to contribute effectively to policy-making. Initially, they faced the challenge of deciding whether to leverage the web for scaling up or focus on grassroots classroom settings. After considerable brainstorming, they chose to prioritize in-person learning, believing that real settings offered the most effective learning experiences.
Masterclasses and Impact
Since its inception, GGI has conducted masterclasses in New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Boston, US, totaling five, with a sixth planned for October. These programs are taught by former and current consultants to the Indian government, who have studied at prestigious international institutions like ISB, INSEAD, Fletcher, and Yale. The founders believe that the most impactful learning occurs in a simulated classroom environment, where delegates find solutions independently and learn from their peers.
The organization has upskilled 500 delegates through masterclasses held at institutions like St. Stephen’s College and IIFT New Delhi. GGI has also provided jobs to 11 selected delegates through collaborations with the Bharti Institute of Public Policy, ISB, and the Quality Council of India, Ministry of Commerce. The founders emphasize that the biggest impact of GGI is the shift in mindset among delegates, who now believe in their potential to contribute to government initiatives.
Notable Initiatives and Collaborations
GGI stands out for its unique approach to education, blending traditional MBA subjects with liberal arts, sustainability, leadership, and international affairs. This comprehensive curriculum prepares future leaders to address evolving environmental and societal needs. The initiative has also established employment partnerships with organizations like the Clinton Health Access Initiative and over 75 other consulting, policy, and product management employers.
Moreover, GGI’s innovative educational model has drawn comparisons with prestigious institutions like Harvard Business School. Both offer state-of-the-art, case-based learning with CEOs as teachers and have extensive international alumni networks. However, GGI provides these benefits at a fraction of the cost, making high-quality education accessible to a broader audience.
Global Reach and Future Plans
GGI boasts a diverse alumni community of over 5,500 professionals across five continents, with regular networking events held in locations like Dubai, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa, and the United States. The founders are now extending their educational disruption to future tech education with the launch of the Global Tech Initiative. This program aims to offer a practical, job-oriented alternative to traditional tech education, condensing advanced curricula into 100 hours of learning.
Founders’ Background and Recognition
Shatakshi Sharma and Naman Shrivastava bring a wealth of experience and accolades to GGI. Shatakshi, a former BCG consultant and Stanford attendee, has been recognized with ‘The Most Promising Women Leader’ 2021 award by the Economic Times and named a ‘LinkedIn Top Voice India’ 2021. Naman, an advisor to senior public officials in India and the United Nations, is a recipient of the Harry Ratliffe Memorial award and has contributed to policy innovation for Goa and India.
Global Governance Initiative, under the visionary leadership of Shatakshi Sharma and Naman Shrivastava, is revolutionizing public policy and management consulting education in India. By providing practical, experiential learning and fostering a global community, GGI is empowering the youth to drive meaningful change. With ambitious plans for expansion and collaboration, GGI is poised to continue its impactful journey, creating an equitable world through innovative education and mentorship.
