The makers of the upcoming movie- Masti 4 and its star cast, Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Oberoi, have been reported in First Information Report (FIR) by the police in Mumbai. The complaint claims that they are promoting vulgarity and obscenity by the trailer of the movie that was posted online on November 4.
The FIR has been registered against the provisions of the BNS, 2023 that pertain to obscenity and affront to the sentiments of the people. The FIR was filed in one of the local police stations after a complaint was raised by a social activist of the city. The complainant argued that the content of the trailer, which is full of the dialogues of a double meaning and explicit jokes and infidelity scenes is over the border of decency.
According to the complaint, the activist claimed such content is poisoning the minds of the young viewers and was contrary to the values of the Indian family. The trailer depicts the comedy trio of Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani in the same roles as married men entangled in risque, but all-adult situations the first in the series released in 2004. Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri are also the actors in the film. It is an assurance of a reverse masti twist wherein the wives come into the extramarital mischief, which causes more havoc.
This is not the first occasion when the makers of the series have come under fire, when it comes to its release in theaters on November 21. Previous movies such as the grand masti and great grand masti attracted the same kind of criticism due to the outrageous humor. The trailer introduction raised quite controversial information on social media even before the FIR. Some fans celebrated it as the naughtiest fun and a nostalgic throwback to the franchise roots, whereas some condemned it as a cringey forced vulgarity, stale, and antiquated.
One of the viewers has commented that the movie feels like a regression of the appeal of the original movie, which is overly dependent on nudity and punny jokes. The film production studio, Balaji Motion Pictures, has not yet given an official statement on the FIR. The genre has recently been defended by director Milap Zaveri, who justifies this fact in interviews by stating that the female characters have their strong roles and the comedy is targeted at adult viewers. According to legal experts, in India, such cases against films are not unique, most so with comedies that cross boundaries.
Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has already rated Masti 4 A certificate, that is, it is limited to adults. Nonetheless, the FIR may result in additional examination or postponements in the event that the courts intervene. At the same time the incident underscores the continued conflict between freedom of creativity and societal values in Bollywood. The followers of the franchise are split, some of them call to boycott and some of them defend it as something entertaining. The complete effect on the box office potential of the film is yet to be felt as the film is ready to see the light of the day.
