71st Nationa Film Awards: 72nd National Film Awards announced today The 72nd National Film Awards were given out on Tuesday, September 22 in Ekta Nagar of Gujarat’s Narmada district where Droupadi Murmu, President, handed over the awards to the winners from all the zones of Indian cinema.
The awards ceremony was hosted at the Statue of Unity this year, in a significant shift from the previous venues of the awards. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had announced that the National Film Award ceremony would be rotated to different parts of the country in the future instead of being held in the national capital.
Awards honouring accomplishments in Indian movies in are: 2024 The winners have been introduced earlier, on July 18, with the precise awards ceremony held in Gujarat on Tuesday.
President Droupadi Murmu Presents the Awards
President Droupadi Murmu was present at the event and handed out the honours to film artistes, directors, technicians and others from the industry.
On September 21-23, the President visited his home state of Gujarat. He attended the National Film Awards at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, on September 22.
All the worlds is a stage. The ceremony drew together artists from all over the country and honoured films in various Indian languages.
The National Film Awards, established in 1954, are awards for the best of Indian cinema. They encompass feature films, non-feature films as well as writing on cinema.
Anant Nag Receives Dadasaheb Phalke Award
One of the highlight moments of the ceremony was the presentation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 to veteran actor Anant Nag.
Anant Nag has had a career of more than 50 years in the industry and has acted widely in Kannada films and the films of other Indian languages.
The government had announced earlier this year that he would be conferred the country’s highest honour in the field of cinema. President Murmu conferred the award during the event held on Tuesday.
It is given in recognition of his dedication to Indian cinema and his multiple roles.
Yami Gautam Wins Best Actress
2.Yami Gautam won the: Best Actress for Article 370.
The film, which is based on the implementation of Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir, won the Best Feature Film.
The award represents a significant recognition for Gautam, who has a lead role in the film.
She won Best Actor for her performance in the film, which was one of the most discussed winners at the 72nd National Film Awards.
Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan Receive Best Actor Award -mdash; The Crouching Actor and Flipping Star Cherriuttam′′ (2014) says, When someone else takes him, he is not hitting, he is banging. -mdash; When I am singing in front of others, I turn my back towards them. -mdash; Manda with blue lights -mdash; Daran, Happy Goa, Bumper Offer.
The Best Actor in a Leading Role was conferred to, for the films, – Mammoothi, for Bramayugam and- Kartik Aaryan, for Chandu Champion.
He was acknowledged for his performance in the Malayalam-language film, Bramayugam. This is his fourth National Award for the Best Actor, having previously won in 1999.
Kartik Aaryan was awarded for his work in Chandu Champion where he played a wheelchair-bound star Murlikant Petkar, who is also an Olympic gold medallist, a Paraswimmer, and former international table tennis player.
The other two were also formally felicitated by the President Murmu at the Gujarat function.
Article 370 Wins Best Feature Film
The Best Feature Film at the 72nd National Film Awards was awarded to Article 370.
Yami Gautam in a still from the movie directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale. The plot of the film revolves around the story of the amendments to Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
The recognition for the film also bestowed a double felicitations upon Gautam, as she was adjudged the Best Actress.
Rajkumar Periasamy Wins Best Director
Rajkumar Periasamy won the award for Best Direction at the Tamil film Amaran.
Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi are the lead pair in the film which is based on the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan.
The award was one of the special awards of the 72nd National Film Awards.
Kalki 2898 AD Receives Popular Film Award
Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment – Kalki 2898 AD starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.
1 The sci-fi film, directed by Nag Ashwin, was among the biggest Indian releases of 2024. It attempted to bring Indian mythology to a future setting.
Another Award in the kitty of the film, that which needs mention is the National Film Award it has won.
Randeep Hooda Honoured for Directorial Debut
Actor Randeep Hooda was awarded for the Best Debut Film of a Director for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
Hooda directed the film and also portrayed its protagonist, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
This is his first feature film.

Pushpa 2 honoured with the award for Best Screenplay. Stree 2 honoured with the award for Best Choreography (Song: “Aaj Ki Raat”)..
Maidaan won in the category of, Best Lyrics Maharaja was awarded in the category of, Best Action Direction
In the language categories, Srikanth was awarded as the Best Hindi Film, and Raayan was awarded as the Best Tamil Film. Feminichi Fathima was felicitated as the Best Malayalam Film.
First time: Gujarat hosts the National Film Awards for the first time.
This year’s venue has been one of the most popular talking points.
The National Film Awards presentation was associated with New Delhi over the years, especially Vigyan Bhawan. The function was held at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat near the Statue of Unity this time.
A person at the ministry told said the initiative was aimed at taking the awards out of Delhi and to recognize the diversity of Indian cinema across state and city.
So the Gujarat function was not merely another awards ceremony. More fundamentally, it heralded a new approach to how the government intends to organise the event henceforth.

Even though the event was held in 2026, the 72nd National Film Awards are meant for movies and cinema from January 1 – December 31, 2024.
Winners were announced by National Film Awards jury in July 2026. An event to honor the winners took place in Gujarat, India.

A Major Evening for Indian Cinema
On the occasion of the 72nd National Film Awards, some of the most celebrated personalities from Indian cinema were present at Ekta Nagar where President Droupadi Murmu felicitated the awardees.
Anant Nag was rewarded for a journey that began over 50 years ago at the evening. Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan shared the Best Actor award, while Yami Gautam received the Best Actress award and Article 370 was named the Best Feature Film.
For the first time, Gujarat would host the event under the new rotation policy for the venue, and the ceremony for 72nd National Film Awards would also be a fresh chapter for a ceremony to celebrate India’s highest film awards.
