Guru Nanak’s immortal words

The great founder of the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak ( 1469-1539 ), included this verse of the poet Kabir ( 1440-1519 in the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Book of Sikhs :

” Awal Allah noor upaya, kudrat ke sab bandey

Ek noor te sab jag upja, kaun bhale ko mandey ”

i.e.

” First, God created light, and then by His creative power, He made all mortal beings.

From that single divine light, the whole world came into being; therefore, who is good and who is bad ? ”.

The core message of these lines is that it teaches the fundamental oneness of humanity. Since everyone comes from the same divine light and supreme creator, artificial divisions of high caste/low caste, good/bad, or superior/inferior among human beings are meaningless

Thus Sikhism arose as a revolt against the inhuman caste system, and Guru Nanak says that all human beings are equal.

This message is extremely important for India today, since some vested interests are seeking to polarise and divide society, and incite caste and communal hatred ( for getting votes in elections ).

Unity of the people, which these verses promote, are vital for Indians if we wish to move ahead and prosper

In fact the spirit of Guru Nanak was followed by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar ( 1542-1605 ) who proclaimed the doctrine of Suleh-e-Kul or giving equal respect to all religions and communities

It was because of the policy of suleh-e-kul that the Mughal Empire lasted for so long, because it was inclusive.
