A big hue and cry is going on in the Indian media, political circles, and elsewhere, over the disclosure in Indian Express about the misdeeds of the Election Commission of India, particularly the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar who allegedly issued orders without consulting, and against the objections of, his two colleagues on the ECI, which are said to have deprived lacs of voters the right to vote in elections.

I hold no brief for Gyanesh Kumar.

However, I explained in my article that this controversy is really irrelevant. Let me explain.

The test of every political activity is one, and only one : does it raise the standard of living of the people ? Does it give them better lives ?

When allegations were made during last year’s Bihar state assembly elections over ‘vote chori’ ( theft of votes ) and irregularities in the SIR ( Special Intensive Revision ), I gave an interview to a journalist Neelu Vyas given below :

I said therein that even if elections are held fairly, and without vote chori, what difference will that make to the common man in India ? Would it result in people getting better lives ? In my opinion it may only result in change of leaders, but the people’s lives will remain as miserable as before, with massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnutrition, skyrocketing prices of food and other essential commodities, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, etc. The leaders of all political parties in India only seek power and pelf, and are not genuinely interested in the people’s welfare ( whatever they may say ). So a change in leaders is irrelevant to the common man in India.

Secondly, even if elections are held fairly with no irregularities in the electoral rolls, 90% Indians will still vote on caste and communal lines. Everyone knows that when most Indians vote, they do not see the candidate’s merit, whether he is a good man or bad, educated or uneducated, criminal or not, etc.. They also do not take into consideration whether prices and unemployment are rising or not. All they see is the caste and religion of the candidate ( or the caste and religion his party claims to represent ).

Phoolan devi, a notorious dacoit who had killed many people, was elected to the Lok Sabha because a large number of voters in her constituency belonged to her backward caste.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections almost 50% of the MPs elected to the Lok Sabha had criminal backgrounds, which proves that while voting most voters do not see whether the candidate is a criminal or not, but only see his/her caste and/or religion.

Casteism and communalism are feudal forces, which have to be destroyed if India is to progress, but democracy, as practised in India, further entrenches and fortifies them ( because it largely runs on their basis ).

So I ask Rahul Gandhi, Prof Faizan Mustafa, Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Singhvi, Rahdeep Sardesai, Shekhar Gupta, SY Qureshi, Yogendra Yadav, Barkha Dutt, Ashok Lavasia, Abay Kumar Dube, Ravish Kumar, Saurabh Dwivedi, Ashutosh, Ajit Anjum and others who have cried themselves hoarse over this issue : why have you not addressed the matters I have raised herein ? Why have you maintained a deafening silence about them ?
