Date was fixed. Aamir Khan had himself revealed a few weeks ago that July 5 was to be the day. A simple registry marriage at his Mumbai home.

But you know how the movie business is. Anything quiet for too long gets magnified. And the past 48 hours have seen the grapevine in Bollywood abuzz with whispers of a delay in Aamir Khan’s wedding to his partner Gauri Spratt.

The 61-year-old actor is reportedly postponing the ceremony.

No official statement has come from the actor’s PR, but their lack of frantic denial is, ironically, the very thing fueling these rumors.

For the record, Aamir had made the registry wedding plans very clear just weeks ago in an interview to Variety India. He was traveling in the United States at the time and had casually shared he and Gauri were taking the plunge with a “very intimate ceremony right in the house. My close friends will be there.”

The Fine Print of a Registry Wedding

The big oversight in entertainment news coverage here is a technicality related to registry marriages. Aamir mentioned it specifically: a registry wedding. In India, under the Special Marriage Act of 1954, a registry wedding isn’t an impulse decision.

A formal notice of intended marriage needs to be filed in the district court where either of the parties has resided for the preceding 30 days.

Then, there’s a non-negotiable 30-day waiting period before the marriage can solemnized, as the notice of intended marriage is to be published on a notice board for the general public to object if they wish.

Now, if for any reason the couple, especially Aamir, missed that filing deadline during his extensive trip to the US or for any other reason, his planned wedding on July 5 becomes legally impossible, plain and simple. Court clerks responsible for such publications in Bandra reportedly have no records of any filing from Khan and Spratt to date. That silence alone is the biggest piece of evidence to suggest a delay.

Who’s Gauri Spratt?

To understand the bigger picture, you need to look at the bride herself. Gauri is an outsider to the dizzying world of Bollywood. With a background in fashion and styling, having studied the same in London, she established her own set of salons, and currently runs a BBlunt salon in Bandra, and works as a consultant in the wellness industry.

Her parentage is eclectic – her mother has Irish and Punjabi heritage, her father of Tamil and British origin.

Her grandfather, Philip Spratt, was an English communist who moved to India in the 1920s to join the freedom struggle. She also has a seven-year-old son, Quinn, from her first marriage. Aamir has two children from his first marriage to Reena Dutta – Junaid and Ira, and one son, Azad, from his marriage to Kiran Rao. Aamir and Gauri had known each other for 25 years and lost touch for two decades before reuniting a couple of years ago.

Nuzhat Khan, Aamir’s cousin, is credited with their reunion at a Bengaluru event a while ago, they officially started dating in early 2024.

Aamir first introduced Gauri to the public at his 60th birthday party in March last year. Back then he admitted that Gauri was still adjusting to the chaos of his life.

Conflict of Interest With Hirani’s Project

Another plausible reason for the proposed shift?

Work! Aamir had taken a hiatus to focus on personal matters, including his marriage plans, following his last appearance in Sitaare Zameen Par.

However, his schedule is packed, and there’s the massive Rajkumar Hirani sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ lined up.

The script for the next instalment of the 2009 blockbuster – set in the backdrop of a severe mid-life crisis for all protagonists – is ready, and with a production of that magnitude, pre-production is expected to be intense. Sources in the production house are whispering about scheduling conflicts for crucial pre-production dates around the planned wedding time. Aamir is known for his single-minded dedication, and if Hirani requires his full attention on set or in intensive workshops, a few weeks’ delay for a small registry function wouldn’t be too much to ask. On the flip side, even a “simple” home registry becomes a complex operation when you’re Aamir Khan.

Security would have to be tightened around his residence, and managing the movements of prominent guests – Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have been rumored to be on the invitation list – is no easy task.

Sometimes, a delay is simply a practical solution to maintain the privacy expected of such an event. The Waiting Game continues

If the wedding does proceed, usually a wedding of Bollywood’s superstars involves visible preparations two weeks in advance, with leaks popping up from caterers or florists. But so far, silence. Close friends of the actor are not commenting on the same; Aamir’s co-star Ali Fazal, asked recently if he’d attend the ceremony, claimed to be preoccupied with promotions outside Mumbai and sent his best wishes to Aamir, without confirming his presence. The Bollywood gossip mills will continue to churn until some visible signs of preparations start cropping up at the actor’s Bandra home, or until he makes a definite statement that sets the records straight on whether the July 5th registry wedding is on, postponed, or a complete fabrication.
