After every update finishes, the device needs to re-compile and optimize every installed app for the newly updated OS.

What is happening: Android’s ART will optimize the app code in the background.
Effect: This will make your CPU run at its highest utilization for many hours after the reboot making it unable to handle simple scrolling, opening apps, or touching the device smoothly.
2. Rebuilding System Caches and Indexing
It’s a process to remove outdated temporary system files and caches during the major OS updates.
What is happening: The device will rebuilding the system caches, re-index gallery thumbnails, re-scan local files, syncing all cloud drives and much more.
Effect: Your storage’s read/write operations will spike to maximum, creating a temporary I/O bottleneck in your system which becomes especially annoying if you have older storage (UFS 2.1 or eMMC 5.1).
3. Custom OS Overhead (Funtouch OS & ColorOS)
Funtouch OS (or Origin OS) of Vivo and Color OS of Oppo are very heavily customised Android skins.
What is happening: Your phone will be running some proprietary background engines simultaneously such as RAM expansion features, live wallpaper, scanner (iManager or Phone Manager), battery manager etc., after the update and reevaluating app permissions, limits and more.
Effect: You’ll experience high amount of RAM being used in the background and consequently frame drops or sluggish application switching.
4. Thermal Throttling
Continuous background process of post-update setup uses a lot of CPU power and disk read/write operations hence causing your phone’s internal chip temperature to increase.
What is happening: The modern smartphone is designed to safeguard the internal processor chip from extreme heat exposure.
Effect: When your phone is heated up the processor speed is reduced automatically which can be noticed as a stutter and lag in your UI.
5. Third Party App incompatibility
Since some third party apps (games, social media apps, banking apps etc.) have not released compatible builds for the new version of the OS, you’ll experience that they may crash, leak RAM, or get stuck in background crash loops.
How to fasten the aftermath of OS update
Let it charge with the screen OFF for 1 to 2 hours post update. Let the OS optimize applications in background while the device is in its dormant state.
Restart it again 24 hours post update. This will flush out remnants of temporary update related setup files.
Update all the apps from play store (and v-appstore/app market) and the issue will be gone in a 1 to 2 day.
Normally, post-update slowdown should resolve within 24-48 hrs from the time it finished installing the new OS, due to the completion of these processes in the background.
