The two-minute trailer dropped on October 5 and immediately became a major topic on social media. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer promises bigger action, more characters and a much larger world for Rajinikanth’s character.
The response, however, has been mixed.
While thousands of Rajinikanth fans are excited about his return and have praised his screen presence, some viewers have expressed disappointment. A section of social media users described the trailer as “mid”, repetitive and predictable, with some saying it did not deliver the same excitement as the first Jailer.
Rajinikanth Returns As Tiger Muthuvel Pandian
The biggest attraction of Jailer 2 is naturally Rajinikanth.
The actor returns as retired jailer Muthuvel Pandian, the character who became one of the most popular mass-action heroes in Tamil cinema after the release of Jailer in 2023.
In the new trailer, Tiger appears to be living a quieter life after his earlier adventures. However, his past begins catching up with him.
The trailer shows him working as a driver and being treated like an ordinary older man by people who do not understand who he really is.
That changes when he is pushed into a situation that brings back his violent side.
The trailer makes it clear that the calm Muthuvel Pandian still has the Tiger inside him.
The Story Appears Bigger Than Jailer
Nelson Dilipkumar appears to have expanded the world of the franchise for the sequel.
The first Jailer largely followed Muthuvel’s attempt to deal with criminals after his son became involved in a dangerous situation.
The sequel introduces a new conflict and a larger group of characters.
The trailer shows Suraj Venjaramoodu apparently searching for Tiger, while S.J. Suryah, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty appear to be connected to the new threat facing the protagonist.
Their exact roles remain part of the mystery surrounding the movie.
The trailer also brings back several familiar faces from the first film.
Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar And Jackie Shroff Return
One of the biggest reasons for excitement among fans is the return of the franchise’s popular guest appearances.
Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff are back in the sequel.
The three actors had appeared in the first Jailer, where their presence became one of the film’s major talking points.
Their return suggests that Nelson is once again using a combination of Rajinikanth’s star power and major guest appearances to create theatrical moments.
Mohanlal appears in the trailer alongside Rajinikanth, while Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff are also shown as part of Tiger’s extended circle.
The trailer also includes Vinayakan, who played the memorable villain Varman in the first film, although the nature of his presence in the sequel remains part of the story’s mystery.
Vidya Balan Gets A Major Role
Another major addition to the cast is Vidya Balan.
The actress is making her Tamil cinema debut with Jailer 2 and appears to have a significant role in the new film.
Earlier promotional material had already introduced her character Kantha, creating curiosity about her relationship with Rajinikanth’s Muthuvel Pandian.
The trailer now gives audiences a better look at her presence in the story.
Reports indicate that she will be one of the important opposing forces in the film, although the full details of her character have not been revealed.
S.J. Suryah And Suraj Venjaramoodu Add New Conflict
The sequel also brings S.J. Suryah into the world of Jailer.
Known for playing intense and unusual characters, Suryah appears to be involved in the central conflict of the film.
Suraj Venjaramoodu is another important new addition.
The trailer suggests that his character is searching for Muthuvel Pandian and may be responsible for drawing the retired jailer back into the dangerous world he had left behind.
The addition of these actors gives the sequel a different group of opponents compared with the original film.
Fans Love Rajinikanth’s Screen Presence
Rajinikanth’s fans have largely reacted positively to the trailer.
Many social media users praised his appearance, dialogue delivery and the moments designed specifically for a theatrical response.
India Today reported that X was quickly filled with reactions praising the superstar’s screen presence and the return of familiar characters. Some fans were also focused on a mysterious figure in the trailer who they believe could be Hrithik Roshan.
However, Hrithik’s reported presence should be treated as speculation for now. There has been no clear official confirmation from the film team that he appears in Jailer 2.
The speculation itself shows how closely fans are examining every frame of the trailer.
But Some Viewers Are Disappointed
Not everyone was impressed by the preview.
A section of social media viewers described the trailer as underwhelming and said it did not have the freshness they expected from a sequel to Jailer.
One discussion on Reddit described the trailer as “really mid” and said that it had lowered the user’s expectations for the film. Another viewer criticised what they felt was a weak final visual in the trailer.
Another Reddit discussion described the trailer as disappointing and criticised what it saw as repeated elevation shots, heavy background music and an overall similarity to the first film.
This is where the “boring and predictable” criticism has come from.
The concern among these viewers is not that Rajinikanth lacks impact. Instead, they feel that the trailer relies too heavily on familiar Jailer ingredients.
The Biggest Complaint: It Looks Too Familiar
The first Jailer worked because Nelson combined Rajinikanth’s mass image with dark comedy, surprising violence and an unusual supporting cast.
The film did not constantly reveal its biggest cards in promotional material.
Some viewers feel that Jailer 2 appears to be repeating that formula.
Rajinikanth has his mass introduction, several slow-motion shots, powerful background music, action scenes and special appearances by popular actors.
For fans, these are exactly the things they want.
For others, the same elements make the sequel look predictable.
The question is whether Nelson has created a genuinely new story or simply made a larger version of the first film.
The Trailer Shows Nelson’s Signature Humour Too
Despite the criticism, the trailer is not entirely focused on action.
Nelson’s trademark deadpan comedy is visible in several moments.
The final part of the trailer shows Yogi Babu’s character appearing confused by Tiger’s behaviour. He points out the strange contrast between Muthuvel killing people and then calmly cleaning a car.
That kind of dark humour was an important part of the first Jailer and appears to be returning in the sequel.
Whether the humour works as well in the complete film remains to be seen.
Anirudh Returns With The Music
Another familiar part of Jailer 2 is composer Anirudh Ravichander.
Anirudh handled the music and background score for the first film, and the combination of his music with Rajinikanth’s screen presence became a major part of Jailer‘s theatrical experience.
He has returned for the sequel.
The film has already released songs including “Bindaas” and “One Name”, building the musical side of the project ahead of its release.
Some social media users, however, have already complained that certain portions of the trailer’s background score do not have the same impact as the original.
That reaction remains subjective, particularly because the theatrical experience will include the full sound mix.
Jailer 2 Has A Huge Cast
The sequel has one of the most crowded casts associated with a Rajinikanth film in recent years.
Along with Rajinikanth, the film features Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and other actors.
The return of Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff has further increased expectations.
This large ensemble is both an attraction and a concern.
Fans want to see what each actor brings to the story, but some viewers have also complained that the trailer has too many characters and gives only brief glimpses of several of them.
The final film will have to give these characters enough space rather than using them only for star value.
Nelson Has To Match The First Jailer
The pressure on Nelson Dilipkumar is high because Jailer became a major commercial success in 2023.
The original film combined action, comedy and Rajinikanth’s star image in a way that connected strongly with audiences.
A sequel was therefore almost inevitable after its success.
But the second part now has to offer something different.
Simply increasing the number of stars or action scenes may not be enough.
The trailer suggests a bigger world, but audiences will ultimately judge the film on whether the story justifies that scale.
Release Date Is October 15
Despite the mixed trailer reaction, the film remains one of the year’s biggest Tamil releases.
Jailer 2 will release worldwide on October 15, 2026.
The film is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music.
With Rajinikanth returning to one of his recent fan-favourite characters and a cast that includes Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Vidya Balan, the film has already generated enormous attention before release.
Trailer Creates Two Different Reactions
The response to the trailer has created an interesting split.
For Rajinikanth fans, seeing Tiger Muthuvel Pandian back on screen is enough to create excitement. His dialogue delivery, style and larger-than-life moments continue to be the biggest selling points.
For some other viewers, however, the trailer has not created enough curiosity about the story. They feel that the sequel is repeating the first film’s formula and that several sequences look familiar.
The words “boring”, “mid”, “repetitive” and “predictable” have appeared in sections of online discussion, while other viewers have praised the trailer as a proper mass entertainer.
The trailer, therefore, has not received a completely uniform response.
What remains certain is that Rajinikanth’s Tiger is back, and the film now has only days to wait before audiences can decide whether Jailer 2 delivers the big-screen impact promised by its trailer.
With its October 15 release approaching, the real test for Nelson, Rajinikanth and the star-packed sequel will be whether the film can offer more than familiar “mass” moments and give audiences a story that feels worthy of a second Jai
