Regime change or system change

The statement of Prashant Bhushan, senior advocate of the Indian Supreme Court, that he wants a regime change in India, has gone viral these days on the media, with the BJP leaders and the ‘godi’ ( pro-BJP ) media strongly criticizing it

.However, it is important to note that Prashant Bhushan did not say that he wanted a change in the system in India. There is a vital difference between change in the regime, and change in the system..

The test of every political activity is one, and only one : does it raise the standard of living of the people ? Does it give them better lives ?

Regime change means only change in leaders, but it does not result in improving people’s lives. As the slave girl Manthara said to Queen Kaikeyi ( see Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas ), how does it matter to me whether Ram or Bharat becomes the next king ? Will I cease to be a slave and become a Queen ?

The ongoing state elections in India

The people in India are like Manthara. Their miserable socio-economic conditions ( massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnutrition, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses, skyrocketing prices of food and other essential commodities, etc ) will not improve by mere change of the regime.

It is only change in the system, which means total uprooting and abolition of the prevalent political and social order, and its replacement by another order, under patriotic modern minded leaders, which can raise the standard of living of the people. Such change in the system can only come about by a revolution

Prashant Bhushan said that there may be bloodshed in a revolution

It this connection it may be mentioned that during the great French Revolution of 1789, on 29th October, 1792, Louvet de Couvray, a member of the French National Convention, attacked the great leader Robespierre in the Convention, accusing him of condoning acts by the people which were illegal.

Robespierre replied on 2nd November ” I am accused of condoning acts which were illegal. But citoyens ( citizens ), the Revolution was illegal, the storming of the Bastille was illegal, the abolition of the Monarchy was illegal. Do you want a revolution without a revolution ? ( Citoyens, vouliez-vous une revolution sans revolution ? ).

When Prashant Bhushan calls for a regime change, and carefully avoids calling for a change in the system, he obviously wants a revolution without a revolution.
