A friend of mine settled since long in USA today called me on whatsapp and said he had a great idea, and wanted my opinion about it.

His idea was to organize a big conference in Delhi of NRIs ( Indians settled overseas ), in which the Indian government political leaders and Indian businessmen will also be invited, whose purpose will be to show how India can progress. He also wanted me to help him organise such a conference
After hearing him for some time I replied that his idea was stupid and humbug, for these reasons :
1. NRIs living in Western countries, many of whom have become affluent, have acquired the ethos of Western countries, and the god of Western countries is the dollar. In other words, all the NRIs care for is making money and leading a comfortable life, and their pretence of loving India, and wanting India to progress is just a facade and a put-on.
2. Most of these NRIs are no doubt highly specialised in science, technology, medicine, etc. Many of them are highly skilled engineers, graduates from I.I.T.s and other good engineering colleges in India, who migrated to Western countries like America, Canada, Europe, etc, and settled there, becoming citizens of those countries, or green card or H-1B visa holders . Others are scientists, doctors, etc. Many of them have been very successful in the West, and lead affluent lives
But a person highly specialized and proficient in one field, may be knowing nothing about economics, politics, or other fields. So when an NRI lectures and sermonises to Indians living in India how India can progress economically he is usually talking nonsense, baloney, and poppycock. What he will say is what other Westerners will say, that is, India should allow more investment by Western companies into India if it wants to progress. But will that benefit India ? For instance, the American government wants India to permit products of American farmers to be allowed entry into India. But if American farm products are allowed entry into India, what will Indian farmers do ? They will lose their markets to Americans, and be ruined. This will be like the entry of the East India Company into India, which captured the Indian markets, and destroyed the markets for our massive Indian handicraft industry, thus ruining our own industry and impoverishing the Indian people ( India had about 27% of the world’s GDP and world trade under the Mughals before the British came to india, and was left with only about 2 or 3% by the time the British left ).

Similar will be the case for retailers and shopkeepers in India if Walmart, Amazon, Costco and other Western companies enter the Indian retail market on a big scale ( some of them have already entered, though not on a big scale ). Indian shopkeepers will be ruined.
3. Most NRIs settled in the West may have brown skins, but mentally they have become like the whites in those countries. They have become Americanized or Westernized. They look down on Indians living in India as inferior ‘natives’ or like children who don’t know what is good for themselves, and therefore have to be sermonized and taught by the NRIs
4. Most NRIs living in Western countries are Hindus, and most of them are supporters of the BJP and are communal minded ( I was told that many RSS ‘shakhas’ run in America ).
A notable example of this was the Howdy Modi event organized in Houston,Texas in 2019 which was attended by President Trump and many American Governors, apart from the large number of NRIs settled in USA.
In this function Modi said ” Bharat mein sab changa hai ” ( all is well in India ). Not one of the NRIs there had the courage to stand up and contradicted Modi by pointing to the massive poverty, massive unemployment, appalling level of child malnourishment ( every second child in India is malnourished, according to Global Hunger Index ), skyrocketing prices of food and other essential commodities, almost total lack of proper healthcare and good education for the masses in India, etc.
