FIDE likely to move Candidates to Singapore as Koneru Humpy considers withdrawal over safety

Professional chess is an industry that is confronting a big choice days before its largest tournament of the season. The FIDE Candidates Tournament, which is planned to begin on March 28, 2026, is already planned to be held in Cyprus. Notwithstanding, some grave safety issues have been expressed by leading players and this has created a controversial issue. People are now wondering whether the International Chess Federation (FIDE) should change the venue to another location such as Singapore which is more stable.

The issue started with the complaint by Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy that she feared visiting the area. She is one of the global players and the possibility that she leaves the world has highlighted the geopolitical risks of the existing venue.

A Star Player Speaks Out
Koneru Humpy is an Indian chess legend and a strong competitor to the women title. However, in recent times she indicated that she is reluctant to visit Cyprus. The motive behind this is quite simple: the island is situated in the Eastern Mediterranean, which is not far away to the hot battlefields in the Middle East.

Humpy indicated the latest news of drone attacks and the great concentration of warships in the waters of Cyprus. To lose her life on one tournament is not rational, she said to journalists. She said that world-class event must be conducted in great and calm environment not in the place where the players could hear the sirens of missiles.

The Conflict Near the Board
Although Cyprus is not at war and a member of the European Union, it is geographically near the tensions between U.S. and Israel in addition to Iran. A drone was used to hit a British air base on the southern part of the island on March 1. The event left the players and their families scared although no one was harmed.

In the case of Humpy and her followers, it is too dangerous. She had observed that a number of flights to the region have been canceled or rescheduled. She feels that the FIDE should have sought an alternative that was safe when the conflict took a few weeks back.

FIDE Defends the Cyprus Venue.
In spite of it, leaders of FIDE are now adhering to their initial plan. Emil Sutovsky, the FIDE CEO has made several statements that Cyprus is safe. He clarified that the organization is keeping a check on the situation daily and it is also in close contact with the local government.

The state of war is not with us in Cyprus, said Sutovsky. He highlighted that the location of the tournament in Paphos is in the west coast which is typically distant to the localities of the drone strike. FIDE feels that the deterrence and security is sufficient to safeguard the sixteen players who are going to compete to seek the right of challenging the world championship.

Singapore as an Alternative Backup.
Fans and analysts have cited Singapore as a potential last-minute solution as the debate remains open to discussion. Singapore is regarded as a safe city and a place that has a track record of major international events. The city-state has already hosted the World Chess Championship last year and has the infrastructures to intervene in case a move is necessary.

It is extremely hard to relocate such a big tournament on short notice. It is the process of modifying hotel reservations, airline tickets and security information of gamers around the globe. Nevertheless, the opponents of the venue in Cyprus claim that the expense of the relocation is quite cheap compared with the possible expense of a safety accident.

What Happens Next
Today, the tournament is yet to start in Paphos. In case Koneru Humpy officially withdraws, she may be fined as per the FIDE rules 10,000 euros. She would be probably replaced by Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine.

As other Indian players such as R Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali, and Divya Deshmukh are still in preparation of playing, the air is full of doubt. The coming days will decide whether FIDE will find an abrupt change in direction and head to Singapore or the world greatest chess players will be forced to concentrate on their boards as a war is going on around them.
