The Indian Youth
By Justice Katju
National Youth Day will be celebrated in India on 12th January 2025, the birthday of Swami Vivekanand
I regret I find nothing to celebrate
The truth is that almost all Indian youth of today are utterly selfish and unpatriotic. All they want are comfortable well paying jobs after they finish their education, in the civil services, or in the corporate sector, or as doctors.or engineers, or go abroad to a western country and settle down there ( like most IIT graduates), and to hell with India.
Many people may say that the above statement is too brutal and savage. But is it not truthful ? I believe in speaking the truth, even if it offends people. A blunt knife draws no blood.
Many people say that the future of India is in the hands of our youth, and that they alone can take India towards prosperity. I don’t agree. I regret to say this, but today’s Indian youth are only interested in prosperity for themselves and their families, and care little for the prosperity of the people of India.
It is not that youth cannot be patriotic.
In India young revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Surya Sen, Chandrashekhar Azad, Bismil, Ashfaqullah, Sukhdev, Khudiram Bose, etc gave their lives for India’s freedom, not caring for their own comfort
When many American youth, who were initially unarmed, took on the mighty British Army in the American War of Independence ( 1775-81 ) in an armed struggle in which they could have been ( and many were) killed, to free their country from British rule, did they think of their comfort ?
When many Chinese youth went on their historic Long March in 1934-35, walking 6000 miles, climbing 18 mountains, and crossing 24 rivers, facing death all the way from Chiang Kai Shek’s troops and natural calamities, did they think or care for their comfort ?
I am sorry to say but I find no spirit of patriotism in today’s Indian youth. Therefore I have little hope from them.
However, I am confident that another breed of Indian youth will soon arise, having the spirit of Bhagat Singh, Surya Sen, Ashfaqullah and other great patriotic heroes of our past, who. will lead the mighty historical people’s struggle and people’s revolution which is coming, to take our country out of the terrible condition it is in today, and make India a country whose people are enjoying a high standard of living, and leading decent lives
