Even though I had this debt on me, I was happy.
The period from the success of Gadar and Indian to few years down the lane was tough and even contributed more to Deol’s debt. This revelation comes after the actor’s career saw a major upliftment by the immense success of Gadar 2 in 2023, where he played the iconic character of Tara Singh. It should be noted that a Bank of Baroda notice citing dues of 55.99 crore made headlines days after Gadar 2 was released and made its way toward 500 crore mark and the actors career reached its peak yet again, after a fallow phase. The 55.99 Cr Debt Back in August 2023, the actor’s financial situation hit a public stride after Bank of Baroda issued an e-auction notice for his bungalow Sunny Villa in Juhu over alleged dues of 55.99 crore along with interest and other charges.
The property was intended for auction to recuperate the payments owed to the bank.
The auction notice appeared days after the release of Gadar 2 as it did robust business at the box office. This creates a dichotomy: the film soaring to new heights, and a bank recovering money from his prized asset. The Bank later withdrew its auction notice with immediate effect citing technical reasons while sources stated that discussions were underway to resolve the matter.
Now, Sunny Deol has opened up about the period. I Had 56 Cr in Debt and was Still Happy According to him, he was quite happy throughout the difficult phase and was living his life to the fullest regardless of the amount of debt he had accumulated. The actor clearly stated that the debt was related to his self- owned assets.
And hence in order to sort it out he had to sell the assets he possessed.
Which is how he went about with it. Instead of painting himself as someone who had nothing left to give, Deol simply implied that there was a need to sell the property and pay off the amount he owed. These statements suggest a more grounded approach from the actor than the headlines conveyed during the 2023 period.
So What Went Wrong?
It was not just his acting career, as the debt was not only due to his acting assignments.
As it turned out, his decision to produce and direct films added more pressure on him financially. Numerous film ventures failed to achieve desirable heights at the box office, leading to massive expenditures on the actor. Ghayal Once Again was one of those films that piled onto his financial burden because it was made on a grand budget but failed to rake in the expected moolah at the box office.
With Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas and other films under his direction, Sunny Deol failed to achieve the desired commercial success for the amount of funds used, leading to accumulated debt. A 2023 report said theDeol family’s debt was linked to film financing. It was said Sunny Sounds Pvt Ltd was stated to be the guarantor of the finance required for the film Ghayal Once Again.
Success Came, Then Career Slowed Sunny Deol’s career was very different in the early 2000s after the grand success of his blockbuster films, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Indian, which released in 2001.
The actor claimed he had difficulty finding the right subject or director after two successful ventures and was facing a competitive environment in Bollywood. He said there were challenges with scripts and directors in finding the right material that maintained his career graph in the same momentum. Producing and Directing Added Pressure Besides awaiting acting roles, Deol was actively creating projects, a decision that also had its own risks involved. When an actor produces and directs a film, the onus of recovering losses can go beyond their acting fee because of studio expenses, delays in filming and low Box Office collections.
In Sunny’s case, a series of producing and directing assignments that did not perform as intended proved to be financially disastrous.
This led to his substantial financial crunch, following which the Bank of Baroda had issued a notice of 55.99 crore over an amount which the actor owed to them. The property was priced at 51.43 crore and a reserve price of 51.43 crore was decided before the Bank pulled its notice. And Now, Gadar 2 His life took an upturn as Tara Singh’s character was successfully brought back to the screens through Gadar 2 in August 2023.
The film earned 300 crore at the box office just within days and collected as high as 500 crore domestically. It not only resurrected Deol’s career but also improved his commercial standing at a time when the 56 crore debt notice was making news. He Does Not Describe Himself as ‘Broke’ Even though the actor had revealed his financial difficulties in the past, he has denied ever portraying himself as someone who was bankrupt.
He stated that when he was in debt, he was still content and happily going about his daily life.
The actor insisted that the amount the actor owed wasn’t to people he knew personally. Instead, it was linked to his personal assets and could be solved by selling them, thereby clearing the debt. The debt, however, came before Gadar 2. This report should clear out any confusion.
The 55.99 crore amount was reported to have been acquired for financing film,Ghayaal Once Again, with Sunny Sounds Pvt Ltd, acting as the business guarantor.
The latter is his firm. The actor has, through recent statements, clarified that the issue came before Gadar 2 and stated how he dealt with the 56 crore debt by selling his property and that at present there is no outstanding loan against the property as all dues have been cleared.
