Goa, once the hotspot of foreign tourists, is reporting an alarming decline in visits. Many are instead headed to Sri Lanka, Bali, and Vietnam. Government negligence, poor infrastructure, littering of uncontrolled proportions, scams by taxi operators and guides, and inflated costs have marred the attraction offered to this state. Other destinations are comparatively superior in terms of infrastructure, in terms of pricing, and in general experience. These declines have an important economic impact that affects local businesses and the global reputation of Goa. Improved governance and tourist-friendly policies are strongly required to revive trust and regain competitive standing.
