The 2016 CSE report found that 84 percent of bread products, including Domino’s pizza bases in Delhi, contained potassium bromate and potassium iodate-two chemicals known to cause cancer and thyroid problems. These ingredients are banned in many countries in the West but not in India, highlighting regulatory lapses. Potassium bromate is a carcinogen and potassium iodate interferes with thyroid functions. Even after all such regulatory changes by FSSAI, the big challenge in India is the lack of proper enforcement and public awareness. This means better oversight, education to consumers about healthier alternatives to food, or all this put together.
