The ex-Miss Universe Sushmita Sen has come out in defense of her late ex-boyfriend businessman and founder of IPL Lalit Modi, who is accused of shocking social media with his announcement of the relationship four years ago
In the latest episode of the Humans of Bombay show, Modi discussed the length of their romance and its high-profile nature. He touched upon the strong criticism which Sen received in 2022, including the derogatory label ‘gold digger’ which the internet trolls bestowed upon her after Modi uploaded vacation photos of both of them on Instagram.
I Was Like a Kept Boyfriend”
Modi systematically challenged the notion that Sen was working under him for finance, pointing out that she is completely financially independent and extremely successful. He said that she was a self-made woman, one who would not ask for money from him
“There wasn’t a single time that I went out with Sushmita that I had to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend.” — Lalit Modi
He also explained about her fortune, saying that the actress and entrepreneur is very well off on her own. Modi explained that Sushmita is a beautiful, successful and self-made woman. She had a lot more diamonds than almost anybody I know; she earned them herself. She even had stores of diamonds.
It is a question of the narrative, the story being told – Lalit Was the Diamond Digger.
Modi also pointed out that Sen had been subjected to “unjustified criticism” after pointing out that he could have had any partner and that funds was not a “bona fide criterion” for their marriage.
To make his point, Modi playfully took the insult to himself:
The Diamond Digger: “She would never take from anyone, and to call her a gold digger was a lie. Lalit was the one who’s the digger of the diamonds. She’s a diamond
This is a repeat of Sen’s elegant reply to the trolls way back in 2023. In response to the online comments, she said she thought the reaction was funny and took to Instagram to say this: “I dig deeper than gold… and I’ve always (famously) preferred diamonds!! And yes, I still purchase them myself!!!”
What has caused the breakup of the relationship?
When Modi is recalling their days together, he is very fond of Sen, and considers her to be an “extremely important part” of his life back then. He also explained that the spontaneous Instagram post in 2022, which “broke the internet”, was made on the spur of the moment, and was posted in front of her as a joke during a fun argument on an airplane.
Though he and his wife were close, their relationship ultimately cooled because of geographical and work-related difficulties.

Distance: Too hard to maintain a long-distance relationship.
Career Alignments: Sen has a successful acting career and is rooted in India, while Modi’s life and activities are in London.
The actress is still a loved one of Modi, although he’s not with him anymore. He was impressed by her “spectacular journey” as a single parent to her daughters Renee and Alisah and said, “She remains a very dear friend” with them.
